From Theatre Arts to Marketing Communication -Embracing the Universal Language of Art: How Theatre & Media Arts Shaped My Path in Strategic Marketing

As a graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Media Arts from the @Federal University Oye-Ekiti, and currently pursuing a degree in Strategic Marketing Communication, I have cultivated a unique blend of skills and experiences that have led me to where I am today. My background in theatre and media arts, coupled with my developing expertise in strategic communication, has enabled me to manage and contribute to various projects and events effectively.

During my undergraduate years, I honed my leadership, organization, and teamwork abilities through roles such as Thespian, Studio Manager, Event Coordinator, and Stage Manager. My time at OSCEntz - OYESource Entertainment and the comprehensive theatre and media arts training equipped me with essential skills crucial to my professional development.

Recently, I had the privilege of volunteering for "Caribana Ignite," – the first Caribbean festival in the Kitchener and Waterloo region organized by the Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region CCAWR. As a Stage Manager, I led a team of Three to ensure the seamless flow of events, coordinate with guest artists, manage the crowd, and oversee the green room. Working alongside professional hosts and individuals from diverse backgrounds proved to be a challenging yet invaluable experience that further solidified my belief in the power of art as a universal language capable of connecting people from all walks of life.

Throughout the festival, I managed one stage, two hosts, three DJs, and more than five performing artists, ultimately contributing to the success of the Caribana Ignite Glow Party. Reflecting on this experience, I am reminded of the importance of continuous learning and embracing new challenges, as one never knows when those skills will open doors to exciting opportunities and put you in the limelight.

As I continue to refine my marketing communication knowledge and apply my theatre arts background to new ventures, I remain eager to connect with like-minded professionals, learn from diverse perspectives, and further explore how the universal language of art can create meaningful and memorable experiences for people worldwide

What people don't get, understand is that you don't have to make a living from your art to be an artist, you just have to make art, what happens with it is another matter, a work is not a lesser work because it is not sold, and therefore it does not make you a lesser artist, if the goal was to sell art, then the goal is set, when money people, galleries, speculators go into art, then the work itself is seconded, it becomes a question of branding, that tell the best story to sell a product, it is in itself the most conventional, it becomes the focal point of the work. So my best advice is, if you want to be an artist, create art while you can, sell it or not, do it because you can't help it, and do it when you have the opportunity, it's gone! Don't succumb to conventions speculators who live at your expense, free yourself from these and you will become a better and more whole artist, free yourself from over-the-top speculators who subvert others' values for their own gain, you only have one life , take responsibility, think for yourself! , and create with the awareness that you are and that you will become what you let your mind flow into. Be nice and irresistible kind. OSCAR VELA
