Many Canadians, when thinking of marathons, visualize bustling city streets teeming with runners. Yet, there's a more challenging counterpart that takes place on rugged mountain trails and through dense forests: trail running. This sport has swiftly claimed global attention.
The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) represents the zenith of trail running. For many Canadians, it's reminiscent of the reverence the Stanley Cup holds in hockey. Set against the backdrop of the Alps, this race spans a staggering 171 kilometers. To offer some perspective, it’s akin to scaling Halifax’s Citadel Hill over 320 times. Beyond just a race, the UTMB is part of a week-long festival in Chamonix, France. This festival includes the TDS, which was 157 kilometers this year. From its demanding course, a champion emerged: Christian Meier from Sussex, New Brunswick, marking the first Canadian victory in one of the UTMB's preliminary races.
Visualize every NHL player – all 736 of them – toeing a race start line. Add almost a thousand more. That’s the 1,649 runners who embarked on the TDS race on Monday, 28th August 2023, all aiming to finish within 44 hours. Amid this vast field of elite athletes, Sussex's own Christian Meier emerged victorious.
His finishing time? An awe-inspiring 19 hours, 36 minutes, and 35 seconds. To underscore this achievement, the runner-up, Simen Hjalmar W?stlund of Sweden, clocked in at 19:57:41. This 21-minute lead is substantial in ultramarathon terms, indicating not only Christian's physical capability but also his strategic acumen.
Christian's journey in sports is fascinating. Having participated in the 2014 Tour de France during a prosperous cycling stint, he transitioned to trail running. This shift can be likened to a soccer star suddenly excelling in professional rugby.

To understand the scale of Christian’s TDS accomplishment, consider this: a recreational runner would finish a marathon (42.2 km) in about 4 to 5 hours. In Christian’s TDS duration, that same runner could have completed nearly four consecutive marathons. Moreover, Christian wasn’t on flat terrain. The TDS presented him with a daunting 9,315 meters (or 30,577 feet) of elevation gain – almost 31 times the ascent of a city marathon.
In recent years, trail running has witnessed rising popularity, with races like the Sinister 7 Ultra in Alberta and the Squamish 50 in British Columbia drawing attention. However, many Canadians remain unaware of the sport's demands. It's astonishing that a talent like Christian, hailing from the serene confines of Sussex, NB, now stands as a global icon in this realm.
Christian's TDS win is about more than distance. It speaks to his resilience against elements like snow and fog. Representing Canada on this platform, he shows that even the most unassuming parts of our country can nurture outstanding talent.
His switch from cycling to trail running isn't just a change of sport; it's a testament to his versatility and evolving legend. Earlier in 2023, he represented Canada in an 85-km trail event in Austria, finishing 53rd out of 122. Christian's story is a beacon, illuminating that it's never too late to redefine success and pursue once-unimaginable dreams.
Regrettably, Christian's achievements have received limited media attention. It's essential to spotlight such feats to ensure they're celebrated appropriately. His journey, from the streets of Sussex to the apex of trail running, is a source of national pride. One can't help but think that a talent like Gord Downie would have immortalized such a journey in song. Congratulations, Christian. Your tale urges us all to strive for our peaks. Well done.
