From Surviving to Thriving: 5 Ways to Boost Your Adaptability

I want to share my short experience about my journey at Bangkit Academy led by Google, Tokopedia, Gojek, & Traveloka , where I used to feel like I was forced to survive due to the tight schedule at Bangkit Academy, but as time went on, week after week, I was finally able to adapt and I even became more developed than myself before. This is the 5 ways that I use to improve your adaptability.

A few days ago, I attended the ILT (Instructor Led Training) Soft Skill Session 04 agenda which discussed the topic of Adaptability and Resilience by Mas Najib Abdillah , Senior Product Engineer at Dicoding Indonesia . From the session, I got a lot of knowledge to strengthen my soft skills. I am very lucky because by joining Bangkit Academy, I'm not only having hard skills, but also honing my soft skills. In this article, I would like to share my journey to adapt at Bangkit Academy.

There are 5 ways to improve our adaptability, I prefer to shorten it to "WITAL", yeah let's just say this is a VITAL thing, very important thing, but the letter "V" is replaced with the letter "W", ha ha ha ??

Working, Interacting, Thinking, Achieving, and Learning.

Of course this is my trick to easily remember it and implement it!

1. Ways of Working

I get insight on how to adapt to office layouts and workspace, working hours, company culture, and working tools. At Bangkit, I learned how to adapt to working online and the culture at Bangkit Academy with a fairly busy self-paced learning schedule, not to mention that there are also online session agendas through Google Meetings such as Weekly Consultations, ILT Sessions, Guest Speaker Sessions, Student Team Meetings, and many more.

I also learned and more using the working tools which is very helpful in increasing my productivity even though the work I did was only done online. Tools that I use is Google Calendar to schedule my agendas, Google Keep to keep track of my list of tasks, as well as Google Classroom and other developer tools.

2. Ways of Interacting

At Bangkit Academy, all activities are online. Of course this is one of the main challenges, interaction with classmates dan my mentor. Not only that, I also learned how to communicate with people who are older than me, including my mentor, Kak Nur Fajar , the instructors, and Bangkit Team, either directly at Google Meeting, via chat, or e-mail. I also learned how to interact with other people with different personalities.

Not to mention that at Bangkit Academy, I was actually "forced" to communicate using English! Woah, at first my confidence immediately shrank when asked to speak in English. However, I believe that I can. I've been watching YouTube and my favorite movies more often in English and without subtitles, as well as my reading and writing skills. Because, in order to become a programmer, developer, or Machine Learning Engineer, we must be able to read the documentation of the program, which is always in English.

3. Ways of Thinking

I used to have a fixed mindset, was afraid of challenges, always wanted to be in my comfort zone, but at Bangkit Academy I couldn't be lazy anymore. I've need to finish this program, because I've decided from the start that I want to get the TensorFlow Developer certification. Therefore, I must be able to implement a growth mindset so I don't give up easily when facing difficulties. With a growth mindset, can help us to grow and always have a desire to learn.

4. Ways of Achieving

I joined Bangkit Academy of course because I've a goal that I want to achieve. I want to get TensorFlow Developer certification, deepen my knowledge of machine learning, improve my soft skills, and broaden my connections. All of that has been provided by Bangkit, and I've to make the best use of it. I need to complete it on time according to the timeline and milestones set by Bangkit Team. By having a sense of purpose and a group norms, we can achieve goals with more directed navigation, especially when working with team members.

5. Ways of Learning

The last one is learning. In today's digital era, knowledge is very easy to find, it doesn't have to be from books, but there are many sources of knowledge that are widespread on the internet. Now, just how do we take the advantage of it. Besides that, don't forget to try to find a mentor (at Bangkit of course is my mentor, and mentors from other learning paths, as well as the instructors). Mentors can help us when we have difficulties, and even share knowledge with each other.

We also have to join professional communities, international or local communities, for example the Google Developers Community Indonesia. Participating in events such as the Developer Conference held by Dicoding Indonesia - the Dicoding Developer Conference (DDC) in February 2023 - can also get insights from experts in their fields. We also participate actively in projects that are entrusted to us to be able to work in teams. That way we will always get and learn new skills.

Adaptability helps me to stay focused on goals and adapt myself to my own abilities. I have become more confident to face more challenges and difficulties in my life's journey including my study journey at Bangkit Academy. Besides that, adaptability can also help me in my professional career in the future.
