You deserve a job that nurtures your soul – not one that drains it.
A year ago, I was burnt-out, balancing on the edge of leaving the world of higher education behind. The weight of student loans hung heavy over my head, tempting me to stay despite my longing for something more fulfilling.
But deep down, I knew I deserved better.
While scrolling through LinkedIn, a glimmer of hope emerged from a post from a former colleague, it spoke of a position in higher education that seemed tailor-made for me, aligning perfectly with my values, passions, and aspirations.
So, I took a chance. I applied, hoping against hope that this opportunity would revive my tired heart, reignite my enthusiasm, and empower me to make a real difference – just like I had hoped when I first left graduate school twelve years ago.
I made a promise to myself.
If I stayed in higher education, it had to be on my terms.
I needed a team and a work environment that prioritized both my personal and professional growth, where my well-being was valued and never questioned.
When the offer came, I accepted it with a mix of nervousness and excitement.
Little did I know that the year ahead would challenge me in ways I never imagined.
Two surgeries, the devastating realization that I couldn't have children, and the loss of a loved one – it felt like life was determined to knock me down at every turn.
During my personal struggles, it would have been easy to give up on me.
But my job, my workplace, never did.
Instead, they demonstrated their support through action.
They adjusted my work schedule, took on tasks when I needed help, lightened my workload when it became too much, and always prioritized my well-being above all else.
In a truly humanistic approach, they made it clear that my health and happiness were paramount in my role. They even went as far as delivering meals to my home while I was recovering from surgery.
But most importantly – they gave me hope even in the hardest moments.

They saw beyond my struggles and recognized the effort I was putting in, even when my energy was depleted.
And then, amidst the trials, came an unexpected blessing.
My student loans were forgiven, lifting a weight from my shoulders.
But more importantly, I found myself still in higher education, not because I had to be, but because I had found a work environment where I was not just merely tolerated, but rather accepted, celebrated – through every challenge, every setback, and every success.
This, my friends, is the heart of a work culture that nurtures the soul, that brings tired hearts back to life, and that refuses to let tough times dim the inner spark.
This is a testament to the power of compassion, understanding, and genuine care in the workplace.
So, to anyone feeling lost or weary, wondering if there's a place where they truly belong and can thrive – take heart. Such places do exist. And when you find one, hold onto it with all your strength, for it's there that you'll find not just a job, but a safe place for your soul.
