AMIC? in the hip joint: a new case example from Spain

Years ago, we launched our indication sheet as an education tool for you. An indication sheet refers to one specific case, which is then delineated with the clinical scenario, the preoperative imaging, the surgery itself and then the outcome, ideally both clinical and radiographic.

It is our pleasure to announce our recent indication sheet originating from Spain which was assembled in cooperation with our trusted partner A2C . Carlomagno Cardenas (Barcelona) is a pioneer in innovative approaches to the hip joint and compiled this case where he treats a hip joint affected by femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAI), and associated chondrolabral defect.

Preoperative Dunn view and the frayed chondral tissue in the intraoperative view

As the patient is 45 years old and active, a hip joint preserving strategy was desired and AMIC? with a simultaneous labral repair and refixation was indicated.

At a 1.5 year follow up, the patient is still satisfied and returned to sports. This is encouraging and augments the available evidence for AMIC? in the hip joint. For example, Fontana (2016) concluded that AMIC? is a valid procedure to repair medium-sized chondral defects on the acetabular side of the hip found during treatment of FAI and lead to long-term favorable outcomes.

Ask the Expert Series

As a Swiss company situated in a democracy, we are strong believers of opinions. That's why we launched the 'Ask the Expert' series in 2023 with its first season, and we recently continued with a second season.

Our experts in this series are Markus Walther (GER), Mark Farndon (UK), Rainer Siebold (GER) and Keng Lin, Francis WONG, FRCSEd (Orth), PhD (SGP), which represent well diversified opinions from both knee and ankle joint specialists.

Our 'Ask the Expert' series should support you in your decision-making process when using AMIC? Chondro-Gide?

Are you aware of the various indications for AMIC? Chondro-Gide?? Are you looking for lessons learned by others? Do you value the long-term experience of others? Then you should not miss the previous episodes of “Ask the Expert”. They are still online and can be watched on our LinkedIn channel. To make it easier for you, we simply list them here, sorted by question.

Since when do you treat (osteo)chondral defects using AMIC? Chondro-Gide? and why?

Have you changed your approach with AMIC? over time?

Are there limits for performing the AMIC? procedure?

Do you typically treat isolated chondral/osteochondral defects or more often combined procedures?

What are the benefits for your patients when they decide to undergo the AMIC? procedure?

We have observed a trend to use biological adjuvants such as PRP, minced cartilage or BMAC to regenerative cartilage procedures (e.g. AMIC?+). Do you see this as well and if yes, what is the benefit in your opinion?

What do you wish from Geistlich in the future?

The answers from Francis Wong will follow within the upcoming weeks – stay tuned!
