From Stuck to Unstoppable… my personal story

Do you ever find yourself staring at your computer screen, feeling utterly stuck and overwhelmed? You're juggling countless demands – businesses, clients, family, relationships – and it seems like no matter how hard you try, you're always playing catch-up. Imposter syndrome starts creeping in, and suddenly you're questioning everything. Sound familiar? I found myself in that exact situation, spinning my wheels on multiple projects and feeling I wasn’t making any real progress.

It reminded me of a client I worked with last year, Sarah, who taught me a valuable lesson about breaking free from life's ruts.

Sarah had been out of a job for months with her savings dwindling. She had applied to countless positions, attended numerous interviews, but nothing seemed to work out. With each passing day, her anxiety grew, and she found herself sinking deeper into a rut.

The Paralysis of Perfection

That's when she reached out to me for help. As we sat down for our first guidance session, Sarah poured her heart out. "I feel like I'm stuck in quicksand," she confessed. "The more I struggle, the deeper I sink. I don't know what to do anymore."

The Power of Small Steps

I listened intently and then asked, "Sarah, what if we shifted our focus? Instead of fixating on the outcome, let's concentrate on the actions you can take." Sarah looked puzzled. "But isn't the goal to get a job? How can I not focus on that?"

I smiled and shared an analogy. "Imagine you decide to lose weight. You plan to eat better and go to the gym. But if you're constantly obsessing over the number on the scale, you'll get discouraged when you don't see immediate results. That's when most people quit and end up back on the couch, watching Netflix and indulging in comfort food." Sarah nodded, relating to the scenario.

"The key," I continued, "is to focus on the daily actions, one step at a time. Build small, consistent habits without worrying about the outcome. Eventually, those actions will become effortless and the results will follow."

Rewriting the story

We decided to apply this principle to Sarah's job search. First, we crafted a CV that she was proud of. Then, we set a goal for her to apply to a minimum of 20 jobs per day. This gave her a clear focus and a sense of achievement, regardless of the outcome.

Breaking Down the Wall

As Sarah committed to this daily action, something remarkable happened. Interviews started coming in back-to-back. She was so busy preparing and attending them that she hardly had time to feel anxious. With each interview, her skills and confidence grew.

One day, Sarah called me with excitement in her voice. "You won't believe it," she exclaimed, "I have three job offers to choose from!" I couldn't help but feel super proud of her and her progress.

"You see, Sarah," I said, "when you focused on the actions, the outcome took care of itself. It's like the saying goes, 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.' If we fixate on the distance, we'll give up before we even start. But if we concentrate on each step, we'll reach our destination before we know it."

Sarah's story is a testament to the power of shifting our mindset. When we find ourselves in a rut, it's easy to get discouraged by the lack of immediate results. But by focusing on consistent, daily actions and letting go of the outcome, we can build momentum and ultimately achieve our goals.

Just like Sarah, we all have the power to get out of a rut, one step at a time. Embrace the journey and the destination will take care of itself.

So, when we are feeling stuck, my three pence worth (hah) as follows:

Action Steps to Break Free…

1.???? Start Small, Think Smaller

  • Choose one specific action to focus on
  • Ignore the end goal temporarily
  • Celebrate completing the action, regardless of outcome

2.???? Prepare for Resistance

  • Acknowledge that motivation fluctuates
  • Plan for days when you won't feel like taking action
  • Set up systems to make the action easier

3.???? Build Momentum

  • Focus on consistency over intensity
  • Track actions, not results
  • Allow habits to form naturally
