From Spoons to Scams: An Ancient Tale of Wit and Deception

From Spoons to Scams: An Ancient Tale of Wit and Deception

An old Jewish tale imparts a valuable lesson about scams and investments.

A clever but financially challenged man lived in a picturesque Jewish community. His modest home was next to the town's wealthiest resident, who possessed a treasure trove of golden possessions.

One sunny Friday afternoon, our resourceful protagonist had a brilliant idea as Shabbat approached. He pondered, "Why not borrow something valuable from my well-to-do neighbor to impress my guests during the upcoming Shabbat meal?" And so, with a hopeful heart, he approached his wealthy neighbor's door.

With a warm smile, he asked, "Neighbor, could you lend me a golden spoon or fork? Something to add a touch of elegance to my table this Shabbat?"

The wealthy neighbor, who had known him for years, didn't hesitate. "Of course," he replied, "You can take one of my fine golden spoons."

Shabbat came and went, and after it ended, the poor fellow returned the golden spoon to his neighbor, expressing heartfelt gratitude.

The following Friday rolled around, and once again, our clever protagonist found himself at his neighbor's door with the same request. Without a second thought, the rich neighbor handed over the golden spoon.

As Shabbat concluded, the poor man returned the golden spoon and a smaller, similar-looking golden spoon. With a twinkle in his eye, he said, "I must have forgotten to mention, during Shabbat, your spoon gave birth to another little golden spoon!"

The rich neighbor burst into laughter, marveling at the fellow's witty imagination. He gladly accepted the smaller spoon as a gift.

Weeks passed, and the pattern continued. Each Friday, the poor fellow borrowed another golden item—a golden Kiddush cup—and returned it with an additional smaller version, always with a clever story of how it was born during Shabbat.

With each visit, the wealthy neighbor's amusement grew. He couldn't help but appreciate the inventive tales and gladly accepted the added golden gifts.

Then, one fateful Friday, the poor man approached his neighbor with a different request. He said, "Neighbor, this Shabbat is special. My daughter's potential in-laws are visiting, and they think we're quite well-off. Could you lend me your precious golden candelabra to enhance the atmosphere?"

The wealthy neighbor hesitated. The candelabra was his most prized possession, nearly his entire fortune. But he couldn't resist the clever fellow's charm and finally agreed, with a stern warning to guard it with utmost care.

Throughout Shabbat, the wealthy man was anxious, fearing for his cherished candelabra. As soon as Shabbat came to an end, he rushed to the poor man's house, knocking urgently on the door.

To his surprise, the poor man answered with tears in his eyes, barely able to speak. After a few moments, he finally managed to say, "It's heartbreaking; last night, your candelabra suffered a sudden heart attack and perished. We tried everything to revive it, but alas, it couldn't be saved."

The wealthy neighbor, initially furious at the absurd story, couldn't help but appreciate the audacious wit of the poor fellow. He exclaimed, "A candelabra cannot die! You better give it back NOW!!!"

With a knowing smile, the clever fellow replied softly, "Well, if a spoon can give birth, surely a candelabra can die as well."

.???? ? ????? ??? ???????, ??? ? ??????? ???????
If a spoon can give birth, surely a candelabra can die.

And so, this tale serves as a reminder that what appears too good to be true often is. Genuine investments come with risks that must be identified, addressed, and mitigated to ensure financial security. Beware of promises that seem too perfect, for they lead you down the path of deception.

Remember, a real investment always carries inherent risks, which should be acknowledged and managed to the best of your abilities.

If you wrote a book on the overlap between Jewish and startup wisdom, I would absolutely read it. Please keep sharing stories like these peppered in with the one-liners from the Talmud that also cause reflection.
