From sperm donor to conquering fears. How I started a business with no resources.

From sperm donor to conquering fears. How I started a business with no resources.

I'll never forget two things: 1. How I felt when my daughter was born. 2. How I feel when I think about missing out on her childhood. That's my "Why" in a nutshell.

I started a business out of thin air, kept it going and made it work with little or no resources. I'm here to give you a few hints on how I did it. My main concerns were obviously time and money. How could I do more than what I was already doing.

#1 Desire. I had a really strong why. I worked 60 hours a week as a chef. I was constantly under pressure and stress. It wasn’t ever going to get better. I was looking at that for the rest of my career. Food service companies don't normally provide retirement so I ws looking at that for the rest of my life. I juxtaposed my ideal life with my current circumstances and a burning desire to change ignited in my stomach.

#2 Conquered fear. I wasn’t afraid to fail. It kinda made me a little queasy but, I instantly refocused on my "Why." I thought back on how many times I had failed in the past and I knew it wouldn't kill me.

#3 Got crafty. I entertained every thought of how I could come up with the money and the time. Nothing was off the table. I was halfway through the application to donate sperm when my wife stopped me. She didn't want another "little me" running around. She thought it was creepy, I thought it was a means to change. I thought about donating plasma, taking a second job or renting out a room in my house. I ended up selling one of my favorite and most expensive toys, a Gibson Les Paul Standard "Gold Top" electric guitar. When I bought it, It was a lifelong dream come true.

#4 I became mindful of time. From then on, every time I had a moment free, I was mindful of it. In the morning, at lunch, at night. What could I sacrifice to get what I wanted. I was ready, able and willing to do anything. TV, turn it off. Reading, switch to business books. Hobbies, put them on hold.

#5 Follow through. I never forgot, I let the fire burn. Every time I thought of my present circumstances, I pivoted to the future I wanted. Knowing that I was working towards a better future, raised my spirits every time. I looked at my daughter and said "She's worth it." I said affirmations, read books, worked on lunch breaks, you name it.

Like many other entrepreneurs, I did whatever it took. In a nutshell it was a strong "Why," a crafty mind, a willingness to do anything and strong follow through. I now work from home with a flexible schedule around my daughter's school schedule. I've since replaced my one guitar with two more that I like even better.
