As a young enthusiast eager to conquer new heights, my journey into the world of skiing began with a mixture of anticipation and naivety. Inspired by my older brother's prowess, I joined the junior high ski club, looking forward to ten weeks of after-school adventures and learning on the slopes. Little did I know, this experience would teach me invaluable lessons applicable far beyond the snowy hills, especially later in my business and coaching career.
The Early Challenge
Missing the first week due to a family trip only heightened my excitement for starting on the second week. Armed with my brother's old skis, I boarded the bus, my mind racing with visions of gliding effortlessly down the slopes. However, my well-meaning friends, eager to share their newfound 'expertise,' led me not to the beginner-friendly "bunny hill" but directly to the top of a daunting slope. The initial challenge of merely getting off the chairlift foreshadowed my tumultuous journey ahead.
The Unplanned Descent
As I stood at the top, poles in hand, I reassured myself that the worst was over. Yet, as I began my descent, the exhilaration of speed soon turned into sheer terror and panic. With no real knowledge of how to control my pace or stop, I transformed into a human snowball, tumbling uncontrollably until one of my stray skis delivered a stunning blow to my head! The walk of shame that followed, broken ski in tow, marked my first harsh lesson on the slopes.
A Turning Point
Faced with the choice to retreat or persevere, I chose the latter. Instead of giving up and waiting it out in the chalet my resolve led me to the rental center, where, using my snack money, I equipped myself with a new pair of skis. This decision not only got me back on the slopes but also into my first official lesson, where my real education began.

The initial excitement, the unforeseen challenges, the moments of failure, and the pivotal decision to either give up or push through are experiences we all share. As I reflect on this story, I see the resilience, adaptability, and willingness to learn from mistakes as fundamental to not just skiing, but to coaching and business success.
