From Skeptic to Spa-day Convert or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Pampering

There’s something about Las Vegas that says, “go big or go home,” and a long (long) time ago when one of my friends turned 21, we all leaned into that motto pretty hard. We had every cliché on the itinerary: the nightlife, the casinos, the shows—everything you imagine a 21st birthday in Vegas should be. But what we didn’t expect was that Krystian Lagowski , our ever-thoughtful planner, threw a wild card into the mix: a day at the spa.
Now, to give you some context, a group of twenty-something male friends in Vegas aren’t exactly jumping for joy at the thought of massages and beauty treatments when we could be skydiving (a thing that happened in Vegas) or riding ATVs in the desert (also a thing that happened there).
“A spa day?” we all groaned. “We’re here to party, not get pampered!”
But Krystian was adamant. He had used up one of our precious days in Las Vegas by jokingly scheduling a day at the Venetian’s Canyon Ranch Spa. I won’t say we were mad, but we were beyond skeptical that his “It’ll be hilarious” perspective was good enough to burn through our valuable partying time.
As we walked through the entry of the spa, it felt like the pace of the world tangibly shifted into slow motion. The bright lights and cacophony of noise from conversations and dinging slot machines faded away and was replaced by the eerily calming and serene sounds of some sort of Naturescapes album. There was also a sort of invisible halocline barrier when you transitioned into the spa where the air smelled like lavender and salt and not the overwhelming scent of cigarettes and sadness hanging over the casino floor. ?
We had been moving at Vegas speed, and this felt like we stepped into an alien world where everything, even gravity, was different.
As we checked in at the front desk, we all joked about how lame it was going to be—how “we were probably wasting our time here,” and how this was “so not our scene”.
How had we let Krystian convince us that this was going to be hilarious?
The attendant showed us back to the locker room area and pointed out the steam rooms, hot tubs, and lounging areas. These communal areas all having seemingly been designed to match the aesthetic of a Fremen sietch (that’s a Dune reference), with sweeping natural cave walls and warmly illuminated built-in crystalline lighting fixtures. We tried to keep up the jokes about how lame it was going to be, how we were clearly wasting valuable time when we could be doing literally anything else.
10 minutes later, a group of 4 young men, who all reluctantly agreed to forgo day drinking and adamant about skipping this experience, were luxuriating in a common area together, adorned in plush white robes, sitting on oversized lounge chairs, with delicate white slippers on our feet, sipping fancy fruit-infused water (I think mine had cucumber and lime in it?) and looking over a cheesecake factory sized spa treatment menu.

My friends and I, who minutes before were scoffing at the very idea of relaxation, were now so fully engrossed in pampering ourselves that the entirety of our conversation was focused on helping each other choose which beauty treatment would be “just perfect.”
“Should I choose the deep tissue massage, or the Vichy salt scrub body treatment? Should I go with the Mani-pedi or the aromatherapy facial and hot stone treatment?”
And let me tell you, once those treatments started, we were done for. All of our skepticism melted away. What began as a "well, I guess we have to" turned into "why haven't we done this sooner?" The staff at the Canyon Ranch Spa had transformed us from reluctant participants to full-fledged spa and beauty treatment enthusiasts in literal minutes. I am embarrassed to write this, but we spent the rest of the day hopping between the sauna and the relaxation rooms, whispering about how this was secretly the best part of the trip.
By the end of the day, we were walking on clouds because of the pedicure and reflexology treatments. The fatigue from late-night adventures had vanished, replaced by a glow that no amount of Vegas lights could replicate. When we left, our bodies (which had arrived nearly pickled) were so infused with moisturizers, micro-nutrients, specialty enzymes and seaweed-based goops that our skin was smoother than a dolphin’s.
What started as a joke became a revelation: pampering wasn’t some frivolous, unnecessary luxury—it was this magical, reinvigorating, and transformative experience.
Ever since that day, taking time to get a massage or sneak in a little self-care has been on our collective to-do list. It’s funny how one skeptical trip to the spa completely redefined what it means to take care of ourselves. It turns out, "pampering" isn’t just about feeling good in the moment—it’s about recharging, resetting, and recognizing that sometimes you just need to hit pause.
The truth is, life moves fast. And when you're hustling, managing careers, family, and everything else, a little pampering can make all the difference. So, if you’re ever on the fence about a trip to the spa or think it’s not for you, trust me—it’s exactly what you didn’t know you needed. And if someone ever says, “I booked us a spa day,” just nod, say yes, and get ready to be converted.
(You can thank me later). ?
