From Siri to Silence: Is Apple Missing the AI Revolution?

For decades, 苹果 was the North Star of innovation. From the iPod to the iPhone, the company didn’t just launch products—it reshaped industries, set standards and defined what modern technology could be. But as the world stands on the brink of a new technological era defined by artificial intelligence, a provocative question arises: has Apple lost its innovative soul?

Recent comments by Mark Zuckerberg reflect a growing sentiment that Apple’s once-dominant ability to lead in groundbreaking technology is slipping. While these remarks could be seen as competitive posturing, they highlight a larger issue: How is it that Apple, with its immense resources and history of disruption, has been caught seemingly flat-footed in the generative AI boom? Even 谷歌 widely considered an AI powerhouse, has been caught off guard by the rapid rise of OpenAI Meanwhile, 微软 once viewed as slow and bureaucratic, made a bold, early bet on OpenAI, earning a front-row seat in the AI revolution.

But there’s another key player in this shift: NVIDIA As Apple and Google scrambled to react, NVIDIA has been quietly building the very infrastructure powering the AI explosion. With its cutting-edge GPUs designed specifically for AI and machine learning, NVIDIA saw the potential of this transformation years ago. While Apple’s focus remained on refining consumer hardware, NVIDIA’s foresight and strategic investments have propelled it to the forefront of the AI revolution, leaving companies like Apple to play catch-up.

From Siri to Silence: Apple’s AI Problem

It’s worth revisiting Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, launched in 2011. At the time, Siri felt like a glimpse into the future. It promised a world where technology could understand, anticipate and assist us in truly human ways. And yet, over a decade later, Siri has become a symbol of stagnation. Compared to the capabilities of ChatGPT or other large language models (LLMs), Siri now feels almost quaint—a relic of a past vision of AI that never quite delivered on its promise.

Where Siri struggles to understand context or execute complex queries, ChatGPT and similar technologies thrive. These models don’t just respond; they converse, adapt and solve problems in ways that feel remarkably close to human intelligence. The gap is stark and it’s one Apple’s vast resources and talent should have been more than capable of closing. So why didn’t they?

The Rise of Generative AI

To understand the gravity of Apple’s apparent misstep, consider the broader AI landscape. Generative AI—tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and others—represents a paradigm shift. These systems aren’t just new apps; they’re platforms capable of transforming industries, from education to healthcare to entertainment. They are the foundation upon which the next wave of technological innovation will be built.

Microsoft recognized this early. By partnering with and investing billions into OpenAI, it secured both technological leadership and strategic leverage. The result? A reinvigorated company now seamlessly integrating AI into its ecosystem, from Azure to Office. Meanwhile, Apple, a company that once defined ecosystems, has remained conspicuously absent from the AI vanguard.

NVIDIA: The Company Apple Missed

While Apple has long been a symbol of innovation, it seems to have missed the most transformative technological shift of our time: Artificial Intelligence. As generative AI takes the world by storm, Apple’s response has been slow and underwhelming, leaving a gap that NVIDIA has been quick to fill.

NVIDIA, with its forward-thinking approach, saw the potential of AI years ago and built the infrastructure needed to support its rapid evolution. By embedding AI into the core of its GPU architecture, the company positioned itself as the backbone of the AI revolution. Unlike Apple, which continued to focus on refining consumer hardware like the iPhone, NVIDIA’s GPUs became the industry standard for training and running advanced AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

While Apple’s Siri, once a glimpse into the future, has stagnated, NVIDIA has powered the next-generation AI systems that are reshaping industries. The company’s ability to evolve and adapt its technology for the growing demands of AI has set it apart, while Apple, despite its vast resources, has fallen behind.

In a world where AI is defining the future, NVIDIA is leading the charge—while Apple is still playing catch-up.

Cash Isn’t Everything

It’s easy to point to Apple’s $200 billion cash reserve as a safety net. But as history shows, cash alone doesn’t guarantee relevance. Kodak had resources but failed to embrace digital photography. Nokia once dominated mobile phones but missed the smartphone revolution. Apple’s position, though far from precarious, isn’t immune to the consequences of inaction. iPhone sales are no longer the rocket ship they once were and the company’s reliance on incremental updates rather than groundbreaking innovation is increasingly evident.

What Does Apple Have in the Pipeline?

The question Apple must answer is simple yet profound: what comes next? The Vision Pro headset, while intriguing, remains a niche product. It’s a hardware bet in an era when the most exciting advancements are happening in software and AI. Apple’s competitors are laying the groundwork for an AI-driven future. Where is Apple’s response? What’s being developed in Cupertino that will remind the world why this company once stood for innovation above all else?

The same question applies to Google, another tech titan with immense AI research capabilities that somehow allowed OpenAI to seize the public imagination. How did the pioneers of AI fail to lead in its commercialization or is something bigger just around the corner?

The Need for Boldness

If Apple’s history teaches us anything, it’s that this is a company capable of reinvention. But reinvention requires boldness. It requires asking uncomfortable questions about where the company is headed and making the necessary bets to remain a leader in the most significant technological shifts of our time.

Apple needs to answer these questions not just for investors or analysts but for its legacy. Is it content to be a company that refines, optimizes and monetizes? Or does it still have the vision and courage to disrupt, redefine and inspire?

As the AI revolution accelerates, the clock is ticking. Apple’s next move may well determine whether it continues to shape the future—or is left reacting to it. Until then, it′s a sell for my portfolio..

Do you think Apple has missed its moment in the AI revolution, or is it simply biding its time? How do you see NVIDIA’s role in shaping the future? Joachim Granelli Optimising for traditional SEO and typed searches isn't the same as it was 5 years ago. Within the next 10 years, the majority of searches will be voice-driven so I wouldn't discount Siri just yet alongside Alexa, Google Assistant, Claude getting two-way voice mode.
