From Silent Discos to Royal Receptions: My Dynamic Journey at Winchester Cathedral

I began my BaxterStorey journey back in March 2022 as Sales and Events Manager for the iconic Winchester Cathedral. Fast forward to today, and the jobs evolved into managing the daily operations at Winchester – a role that’s as dynamic as it gets! From overseeing a team of 10 during the day to running events for up to 800 guests, my days are a whirlwind of café upkeep and setting up for all sorts of events!

In March 2023, we completed our café refurb – a huge project which was great fun to be involved with. Everything had a glow up, from furnishings to food!

Besides the fun of managing a bustling café and organising memorable events, the best part about my job is the work-life balance. I’ve found a rhythm where busy seasons like Summer are balanced out by quieter periods in January. We are a seven day operation here but I don’t always work late nights or weekends.

When I look back at all the events here at the Cathedral, there’s been some real highlights. One was a silent disco in Winchester Cathedral – it was fantastic! The annual Christmas Market is always a favourite too. We’ve had canape receptions for Princess Anne, and drink receptions for Winchester Law Sunday Service. Whether it’s for private or corporate clients, every event brings its own magic (and challenges!)

Exciting things are on the horizon at Winchester Cathedral. With the upcoming launch of our new Pavilion in September – a stunning semi-permanent structure capable of hosting up to 200 guests – it’ll be perfect for weddings, parties and outdoor corporate events.

I always get asked how we can attract more young people into the world of hospitality. We need to debunk the myth of poor pay and unsociable hours. BaxterStorey’s changing the narrative, paving the way for a new of era. We do have a work life balance, and with initiatives like the Excellence in Hospitality training, we’re setting the bar high for career development.

As I continue my journey with BaxterStorey, I’m constantly reminded of the possibilities within our industry. Whether it’s working events at historic landmarks or getting stuck in to new training courses, every day brings something new.
