From Sidelines to Spotlight: How Our Allyship Can Change the Game for Women's Sports

This spring has been a thrilling season for women's sports, leaving many of us in awe of the sheer talent and determination on display. And though we've bid farewell to March Madness, the excitement is far from over—the WNBA is up next with the regular season officially kicking off on May 14th! If you've been paying any attention at all to women's collegiate basketball, you've undoubtedly been entertained and intrigues. But the sport has also eye-opening, showing us new ways to show our allyship and support these incredible athletes. The revelation of the modest starting salaries for stars like Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso, and Angel Reese struck a chord of disappointment. However, let's agree that we don't have to settle for "it is what it is." Megan Rapinoe's fierce advocacy in women’s soccer has already shown us that change is within our grasp, and as these athletes continue to dazzle us with their skills on the court, it’s our turn to step up by filling the stands and tuning in.

The media coverage for women's sports doesn't come close to that of men's, which is precisely why our involvement is so crucial. By watching and attending games, we're not just passive spectators; we're active participants advocating for equity and equality in sport. This is how we vote for what we believe in—by investing our time and money to ensure that these phenomenal women receive the recognition and rewards they deserve.

Ladies, this means we can mix fun with activism in our own unique way. Swap out your next "Sip and Paint" party or book club meeting for a game night with a twist—watching and cheering on live women's sports with a glass of wine in hand. It keeps the community vibes strong without the hassle of a reading deadline or figuring out where to hang a new painting. It’s a refreshing change that turns our gatherings into meaningful support for advancing women in sports.

For the sports enthusiasts among us, it’s time to boost your game attendance—but make it women’s sports this time. Challenge yourself to balance the scales; for every two men’s games, why not attend one women's game? Or better yet, aim for a 50/50 split if you're already on board. It’s a simple yet effective way to deepen our support for women’s sports. Engaging in this kind of allyship pushes for equity and equality in yet another vital aspect of society. Plus, it’s an easy lift compared to many of today's challenges, and the joy of watching these athletes excel is truly uplifting. So let’s all jump in with both feet and be ally champions and affect change across all women’s sports!
