From shipping container to affordable home
One of my sons is obsessed with tiny homes and other forms of nontraditional housing. No wonder - he lives in one of California's most expensive regions. From the Texas metroplex to the Colorado Front Range to the Silicon Valley, affordable housing is a distant memory.
In McKinney, Texas, the North Collin County Habitat for Humanity is trying one version of affordable housing that also gets points for recycling and sustainable re-use: Shipping containers. With subsidies tied to income, there will be a chance for home ownership for those who are in the minimum-wage bracket.

7 年On the one hand, the container is almost just a sketch of a home. Four walls, roof, floor. All the goodies still have to be added. But the idea of a couple standard sizes might encourage entrepreneurs to create an Ikea-style package where a semi-skilled crew could modify the container and bolt in much of the electromechanical and plumbing. I've seen quite a few one-off designs for container-to-home. But standardizing could drive the cost down and make it truly accessible housing.
