I know the journey from military service to civilian life can be challenging. Having been there myself, I want to offer hope and inspiration to fellow veterans.
? 12 Months Before EOS: This is your opportunity to plan your future. I started by reflecting on my skills and passions, paving the way for a meaningful civilian career. Don’t limit yourself, you sacrificed so much, but remember no one owes you anything. However, they do not know what they’re missing hiring a Veteran. U.S. veterans gain transferable skills like leadership, teamwork, discipline, problem-solving, communication, technical expertise, project management, logistics, medical skills, security, mechanical operation, intelligence, language proficiency, fitness, and crisis management during military service. What company wouldn’t want these qualities?
? 9 Months Before EOS: Understanding VA benefits and healthcare options can be complex, but it's crucial. I took the time to research and make informed decisions. Identifying entitled military benefits is vital for financial stability, healthcare access, education, employment, disability support, and legal rights. It enhances quality of life and future planning. The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) can indirectly assist veterans by providing data and insights related to the cost of living in various locations. This information can be valuable to veterans considering relocation or job opportunities, as it helps them make informed decisions regarding their financial well-being in different areas. You have 9 months to squirrel away and be selective of what career path you choose due to financial stability.
? 6 Months Before EOS: Networking made all the difference for me. I attended job fairs and connected with civilian professionals. You need a mentor, someone who is looking out for your best interest with no strings attached. The relationships I built were key to my successful transition and still help me today. Learn about organizations that have Veteran programs at no cost. They do exist, I know I help manage one with 7X24 Exchange Metro NY Veterans committee.
? 3 Months Before EOS: Preparing for job interviews can have it challenges. I sought advice from mentors and practiced extensively, boosting my confidence with interview techniques, resume writing etc. it is far more than just a 4-hour TAP class. No need to reinvent the wheel, so check out what TAP online can offer!
