From Scarcity to Abundance: How Collaborative Mindsets Can Overcome Energy Poverty
The energy evolution from scarcity to abundance is well underway, but there is still much work to be done for the people of the world to enjoy equitable access to energy. The fossil fuel and electric utility industries have powered our world and driven incredible progress in living standards and prosperity. However, despite these advancements, a significant number of people worldwide still lack access to electricity. According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2021 report, an estimated 759 million people worldwide did not have access to electricity in 2020, with sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia being the most affected.
To hasten the transformation from energy poverty toward equitable access, we must transition our mindsets from scarcity and conflict toward abundance and collaboration. As someone who grew up in a large family with limited resources, I learned firsthand how necessity can be the mother of invention. My parents instilled in us the importance of collaborating, building together, and leveraging our creativity in constructive ways to overcome scarcity. I often reflect on my childhood with gratitude for the life skills we were taught and the collaborative spirit fostered by working together to get by and get ahead. My siblings and I learned to fight for and build upon a shared vision rather than over scarce resources or with each other. To get ahead, we have to get along and work together.
In many ways, the transition from fossil fuels toward renewable energy sources is a similar journey. The shift toward renewable energy is no longer a matter of if, but when and how. We must work together and leverage our collective creativity and resources to accelerate the transition toward a more sustainable and equitable energy future.
To achieve this, we must embrace new technologies and innovations that will help us generate and distribute renewable energy more efficiently and affordably. We must also work to ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are shared equitably so that no one is left behind. This will require a collective effort, with governments, businesses, and individuals all playing a role in the transition.

At the same time, it's important to recognize that the transition toward renewable energy is not just about mitigating the impacts of climate change, but also about creating a more prosperous and just society for all. As we've seen in many parts of the world, access to energy can be a transformative force, empowering individuals and communities to improve their lives and build more resilient and prosperous economies.
The transition toward renewable energy is not without its challenges, but with a mindset of abundance and collaboration, we can overcome these challenges and build a more sustainable and equitable energy future. By working together and leveraging our collective resources and creativity, we can accelerate the transition toward renewable energy and build a brighter future for generations to come.

1 年Great article Les, but energy poverty may not be the right word. I’d say “power poverty” if anything. Not be that guy who points at smaller things, but I do believe that there’s a clear lack in understanding of energy, and we need to address that. Energy education for all ! #lesmood #greentech
