From RTO to Quirky PTO: What’s New in Workplace Culture?

Is RTO the new normal? ??

Amazon’s leading the way in the journey back to the office, mandating for 5 days a week in the office for corporate team members.

And they’re not alone: more brands are leaning towards a return-to-office (RTO) policy three years after the pandemic, signalling a shift in workplace culture.

According to a recent report, a staggering 80% of CEOs believe that being back in the office is essential for productivity and collaboration.

With productivity concerns like ‘fauxductivity’ in hybrid settings continuing, it’s no surprise there’s a push for a return to more structured office environments.

Interestingly, while hybrid work was once the norm, many younger workers are now experiencing “RTO FOMO”, feeling left out as peers settle into office life.

‘Tis (nearly) the season ??

Booked your office Christmas party yet?

If not, you’re in the minority — most tend to book by July or August!

As for the most popular day? In 2023, most office Xmas parties were held on a Thursday (51%), with only 21% hosted on a Friday.

That’s great news for finance teams, since mid-week dates tend to have a lighter price tag.

And since the average cost is around £90 per person, that means things can get pricey for larger teams.

Feeling fit? ???

According to a very recent study, giving office workers access to a gym membership does, in fact, increase their physical activity.

And since it’s already been proven (time and time again) that physical movement in sedentary office workers reduces stress, improves focus and productivity, and generally improves their mood, it’s easy to see that having an on-site gym is one of the best amenities in an office space.

Even better, it’s actually more tax efficient (and sometimes outright cheaper) to have an onsite gym in your office rather than pay for or discount gym memberships for employees.

Tinder-leave, paw-rent leave… PTO’s getting creative ??

More brands are getting imaginative with the different forms of PTO (personal time off) they offer.

From ‘Tinder leave’, encouraging employees to “explore dating options” to ‘paw-ternity leave’, where team members are entitled to time off to get to know their new furry friends, PTO is evolving far from the basic essentials like annual leave, compassionate leave, and parental leave.

After more inspiration? How about:

  • Moving house leave
  • Mental health leave
  • Study leave
  • Marriage leave
  • Volunteer time off
  • Birthdays off

By offering creative leave options, brands can foster a more engaged and loyal workforce — increasing employee satisfaction while promoting a healthy work-life balance.

It’s all about compassion.

As brands explore innovative PTO options and the push for RTO grows stronger, it’s clear that workplace culture is evolving.

Until next time,
