Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) probably isn’t long for the 2020 Democratic primaries, but she’s going to make the most of her time there. At last night’s CNN debate, Gabbard saved a great deal of her ammunition for the mainstream media, calling out both the hosting network and The New York Times for their coverage of her campaign. Gabbard was set off by moderator Anderson Cooper, who asked: “Last week, you said that American troops should get out of Syria now. You don’t agree with how the president handled the withdrawal. What would you have done differently? How would you have pulled out troops without the bloodshed we’re seeing now?” “Well, first of all, we’ve got to understand the reality of the situation there,” Gabbard replied, “which is that the slaughter of the Kurds being done by Turkey is yet another negative consequence of the regime change war that we’ve been waging in Syria. “Donald Trump has the blood of the Kurds on his hand,” she continued, “but so do many of the politicians in our country from both parties who have supported this ongoing regime change war in Syria that started in 2011, along with many in the mainstream media who have been championing and cheerleading this regime change war.”
That’s when Gabbard turned her ire on the media: “The New York Times and CNN have also smeared veterans like myself for calling for an end to this regime change war,” she said. “Just two days ago, The New York Times put out an article saying that I’m a Russian asset and an Assad apologist, and all these different smears. This morning, a CNN commentator said on national television that I’m an asset of Russia. Completely despicable.” It’s impossible to mistake Tulsi Gabbard for a conservative, but she’s the only one in the Democratic field who occasionally makes her way around to a cogent point. Indeed, she’s practically the only one worth watching on that entire debate stage. Willing to go after her own party’s grave political missteps and to tell it like it is when it comes to the media, she’s a breath of fresh air amidst the smog of socialism, Trump Derangement Syndrome, and social justice warrioring that eats up the majority of the stage. It’ll be a shame when she’s gone. If the Democratic Party had more people like her, it wouldn’t represent such a terrifying threat to the nation.
