From a recent conversation....
GAL: "Kev, I need to expand my comfort zone."
ME: "Why?"
GAL: "Because the success I'm seeking is outside my comfort zone."
ME: "Is it?"
GAL: "That's what I hear coaches and experts saying all the time."
ME: "Are you sure they're actually good coaches and/or experts?"
GAL: (silence)
ME: "Would you be okay with me throwing a few ideas by you?"
GAL: "Sure."
ME: "First, be careful who you take advice from. You can always tell a tree by the fruit it bears. So when someone gives you advice, perhaps determine if there's any fruit on their tree to indicate that they're giving advice based on actual experience or if they're just giving their opinion."
GAL: "That makes sense."
ME: "Second, when someone gives you advice, ask yourself if you have any evidence in your own life to indicate that what they're saying is accurate or inaccurate."
GAL: "Okay."
ME: "Has any and every success you've had in your life up until this point always been a result of you going outside your comfort zone?"
GAL: (after thinking for about five or ten seconds) "No, I can think of numerous successes I've had which were within my comfort zone."
ME: "So does the statement, 'the success you're seeking is outside your comfort zone' seem accurate?"
GAL: "I guess not."
ME: "May I throw another idea by you?"
GAL: "Okay."
ME: "What's a 'comfort zone'?"
GAL: "What do you mean?"

ME: "What is a comfort zone?"
GAL: "I guess it's an area for lack of a better way of describing it which you're comfortable in."
ME: "Would you agree with me that what you just described is not a physical area or location but actually a thought or an idea?"
GAL: "Yes."
ME: "Would you also agree that a thought or an idea is just a thought or an idea and not an actual 'thing' per say?"
GAL: "Yes."
ME: "Then perhaps deepening your understanding of the nature of thoughts and ideas might be a much more valuable use of your time and noggin than examining the content of your thoughts and ideas."
GAL: (silence)
ME: "Almost everyone spends the majority of their life in the content of their thoughts and ideas with almost no and in most cases no understanding whatsoever of the nature of thought and ideas. This is no small thing to grasp. It'll literally change your life."
GAL: "Huh."
ME: "Would you like to explore this some more with me?"
GAL: "Absolutely."
ME: "Cool, let's schedule some conversations...."
