From Ramen to Renewable: Why I Share My Journey Here? (Weekly Newsletter #3)

My entrepreneurial journey has been anything but conventional. It started with a humble ramen shop, and like many entrepreneurial paths, it has included unexpected twists and turns. Some of you may know that in my earlier years, I was involved in the adult entertainment industry. This was a legal, regulated business in NZ that adhered to all requirements, including annual police checks for "fit and proper person" status, which we consistently passed.

Five years ago, I made a conscious decision to exit that industry and embark on a new journey. I believe our past experiences, irrespective of the sector, shape us and provide lessons that contribute to our future success.

Building a Sustainable Future

Today, my focus is firmly on building a sustainable future. Through Stonewood Group , I’m deeply committed to:

  1. Renewable Energy - Investing in solar farms and EV charging infrastructure, contributing to a greener New Zealand.
  2. Quality Housing - Developing residential properties alongside Sir John Key (former Prime Minister of NZ) and his son, Max Key, as we expand our partnership under Stonewood Key to create communities that elevate Kiwi living standards.
  3. Hospitality - Contributing to the vibrancy of the hospitality (hotel) sector, creating jobs and memorable experiences.

Across these ventures, I’m proud to have employed over 600 kiwis. I also remain steadfast in giving back to the community that has supported me, contributing resources to local sports teams and various charitable organizations over the past two decades.

Why I Share My Story on LinkedIn

I share my journey—including my unconventional past—because I believe in transparency and the power of authentic connection. LinkedIn provides a platform to:

  • Inspire Others: Show that transformation and growth are always possible.
  • Promote Open Dialogue: Foster understanding and challenge preconceived notions.
  • Connect with Like-Minded Individuals: Build relationships with those who share a vision for a better future.
  • Showcase My Goals: AI, renewable energy, and scaling our business.
  • Attract Top Talents: Grow a world-class team committed to innovation and progress.

Moving Forward

I firmly believe that a person’s character is defined not just by their past but by their present actions and their commitment to future contributions. My commitment is to continue building businesses that create value, provide opportunities, and contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous New Zealand.

I welcome further discussion and invite you to learn more about my current work with Stonewood Group. What are your thoughts on navigating career transitions? What are your biggest goals? Share them below.

Awesome advice John Chow and great inspiration. However here's hoping the tall poppy syndrome these days in NZ is less so as success should be applauded.
