From Principles to Practice: The Road to Responsible AI

Welcome to the first installment of AI Responsibly—a newsletter focused on promoting and advancing responsible artificial intelligence. Our goal is to offer business leaders insights and practical guidance for navigating the complex world of AI. Let’s dive in!

What Is Responsible AI?

Written by Knar Hovakimyan

If you’re thinking about how to approach AI responsibly at your organization, we have one word for you: cars. (Surprise!)

Hear us out: What makes cars safe??

It’s not just seatbelts, traffic laws, and crash tests—though they all contribute to cars’ overall safety. A constellation of manufacturing processes, features, testing, governance, education, and societal norms allows billions of people to safely drive and ride in cars every day.?So, what makes AI responsible? Responsible AI is the practice of creating and utilizing artificial intelligence in a manner that is aligned with human values. Like cars, there is no single factor or team that makes AI responsible, but standards and practices adopted across an entire organization create the scaffolding for a sustainable and comprehensive approach to responsible AI.

Implementing Responsible AI at Your Company

If AI is the vehicle, business leaders are in the driver’s seat. It’s up to leaders to:

  1. Understand the capabilities of the AI tools at their disposal
  2. Recognize the potential pitfalls
  3. Select appropriate use cases
  4. Institute protections against risks?

If answering these questions is uncharted territory for business leaders, we recommend establishing a moral framework to guide your AI-related decision-making.?

So how can you do the right thing when it comes to responsible AI?

Crafting Responsible AI Frameworks

Queue: a guiding framework. Creating a framework for responsible AI at your organization can help guide decisions around building or adopting AI.

Don’t know where to start? Grammarly’s Framework for Safe Generative AI Adoption, the AI Risk Management Framework from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and ISO/IEC 42001 requirements, published by the Internal Organization for Standardization, can help. Use this framework as a jumping-off point to develop your company’s responsible AI standards.?

Once your framework is established, you are ready to begin stress-testing it with AI tools. The ultimate goal of responsible AI is to use AI advancements in a way that is consistent with your values, both as a human and as an organization.

You can learn more about how we think about responsible AI at Grammarly and our responsible AI standards in this blog.
