From Potential to Progress: Celebrating International Youth Day 2024 with PMaps
A Personal Reflection on International Youth Day 2024
As I sit down to reflect on International Youth Day 2024, I’m filled with a sense of purpose and excitement. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” resonates deeply with me, not just as a professional at PMaps, but as someone who has witnessed firsthand the incredible potential of today’s youth.
Let me take you on a journey—one that intertwines the stories of young professionals, the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, and how PMaps, since its inception in 2012 and operational launch in 2014, has been playing a crucial role in shaping the future of work.
The Beginning: A Vision for Youth Empowerment
A decade ago, the team at PMaps and I embarked on a mission to bridge the gap between raw talent and meaningful employment. We knew that young people were entering the workforce with unprecedented enthusiasm and creativity, but the challenge was ensuring that their skills were recognized and matched with the right opportunities.
PMaps has been at the forefront of helping organizations make better talent decisions. Our visual-based assessments have enabled companies across various sectors to identify the best fit for their roles, leading to better hiring outcomes and more engaged employees.
Now, with the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme , we see a unique opportunity to further empower the next generation of professionals by providing them with on-the-job experience that aligns with their strengths and aspirations.
The Challenge: Matching Talent with Opportunity
Imagine a young graduate, full of potential but unsure of where they fit in the professional world. They apply for an internship through the PM’s Internship Scheme, hoping to gain experience that will set the foundation for their career. But how do we ensure that this graduate is placed in a role where they can truly excel?
This question has been central to our work at PMaps. We’ve seen how traditional hiring methods can be subjective and sometimes fail to place candidates in roles where they can thrive. This realization led us to develop a solution that would assess not just a candidate’s qualifications, but also their personality, cultural fit, and growth potential.
The Solution: How PMaps Is Changing the Game
Since 2014, PMaps has been helping organizations make informed, data-driven decisions in their recruitment processes. Our digital assessments are designed to be objective, fair, and insightful. We use visual-based assessments to evaluate a candidate’s skills and personality in a way that eliminates human bias, ensuring that every candidate—whether for a full-time role or an internship—is assessed based on their true abilities.
What’s more, our assessments are designed to help both companies and students find the right fit. For employers, this means getting interns and employees who are more likely to stay, grow, and contribute meaningfully to the organization. For young professionals, it means being placed in roles that align with their skills and career goals, providing them with valuable on-the-job experience.
A Real-World Impact: Stories from the Field
Let me share a story that illustrates the power of these assessments. A company was struggling with high turnover rates among its newly hired employees. They were enthusiastic and talented, but many of them left. The company was puzzled—what were they missing?
They turned to PMaps for help. By using our assessments, they discovered that many of the hires were placed in roles that didn’t align with their personalities or career goals. With this insight, they were able to realign their placements, matching candidates to roles that truly suited them.
The result? A significant drop in turnover and a more engaged, productive group of interns. This wasn’t just a win for the company—it was a win for the new hires who were now in roles where they could thrive, gaining invaluable experience that would set them up for future success.
