As technology continues to revolutionize the way we do business, it's more important than ever for small business owners to implement it effectively. However, implementing technology can be a daunting task for those who are not tech-savvy.
As a PhD student studying Technology Implementation, I've noticed that small business owners often make certain mistakes when introducing technology. I'm here to help you steer clear of them.
In this article, I'll cover eight common mistakes and strategies on how to avoid them.
Mistake No. 1: Your Goals Are As Cloudy As Your Vision
Before implementing technology, define your goals & create a clear plan for achieving them. These goals need to include what you want to achieve in your business, how you want clients to move & interact with you, & how you need your team to move. This will help you choose the right tools, measure success, and stay focused on your objectives.
Mistake No. 2: Choosing the Wrong Technology
Do your research & fully evaluate different tools based on your business needs. Consider factors such as cost, investment, ease of use, and customer support after you've decided what your processes & business needs are. Lead your tech implementation based on your actual needs and future evolution rather than being led by shiny bells & whistles and being bamboozled.
Mistake No. 3: Neglecting Website Content
Yeppers! Your website is an actual piece of technology all in itself. To keep your audience engaged and boost your search engine rankings, make sure to consistently add fresh content to your website, such as blog posts, product updates, and other media. Check out my article about that here.
Mistake #No. 4: Not Investing in Training
Invest in training for yourself & your team (if you have one) to ensure everyone is equipped with the necessary skills to use technology effectively. Please stop improvising and take this seriously. It's time to take your business seriously.
Mistake No. 5: Skipping & By-passing Security Measures
Implement security measures such as firewalls, antivirus software, and data encryption to protect your business from cyber threats. Stop being surprised when your website goes down or your links redirect due to lack of protection against hacking or cloning.
Mistake No. 6: Ignoring Customer Feedback - It's Not About You!
Use technology to collect customer feedback and incorporate it into your business strategy to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty. Testimonials are not the only thing you need to pay attention to. Seek how you can improve & get out of your feelings.
Mistake No. 7: Overcomplicating Processes
Focus on simplifying processes & reducing complexity when implementing technology. You may like jumping through hoops, but that doesn't mean the same for your clients, your team, & potential customers. Consider how technology can automate repetitive tasks & streamline workflows to improve efficiency & productivity.
Mistake No. 8: Failing to Plan for Upgrades
In the world of business and technology, upgrades are absolutely necessary. Plan for upgrades when implementing technology to stay up-to-date and take advantage of new features & capabilities. Be mindful that upgrades should enhance your business and not clutter your tool chest. If you don't need it ditch it. Don't be "double-talked" into tech you don't need & upgrade for improvements.
