From pause to progress: After a 10-year pause, Jake returned to earn his online degree. Here’s how he did it

San Antonio College alumnus Jake Gillit put his college plans on hold for almost 10 years to focus on his family and work at his father's auto equipment and maintenance store. Jake found himself wanting more from his career, and when the opportunity for greater responsibility arose, he grew to learn that his once-sharp set of skills needed refreshing.

Two years later, he earned an associate degree in business management online. With his degree, Jake received more responsibility at his father’s auto equipment and maintenance store. He manages all business aspects of three store locations in Texas.

How’d he do it? One step at a time.

Jake’s steps to successfully earning an online degree:

Establish an end goal

To advance in the family business, Jake knew he needed new skills in business planning, budgeting, and accounting. Having previously attempted trade school, he now sought a flexible, accredited degree program. After exploring his options, Jake chose to pursue an online associate degree in Business Management at San Antonio College through AlamoONLINE. Over the next couple of years, he would focus on his education and professional goals to elevate his career.

Find a program that fits

A program offered online allowed him to earn a degree on his terms while balancing full-time work and family responsibilities. It was the right fit for his schedule, molding to life’s demands. “I could manage my workload per semester and complete my coursework on my own time, whether after work or after the kids go to bed,” noted Jake.

Set realistic expectations

Starting slowly, with two classes at a time, Jake gradually found his footing again. His advice to others would be to take your time. “You can adjust the workload to your preferences. If you feel ready, speed up your course load and take flex courses (8-week courses). You make it work for you.”

Take advantage of resources

As a sole provider for his family, Jake was grateful for the resources that helped ease any financial burden. "With AlamoONLINE, there weren't any hidden costs for book rentals because they're already included in tuition," he highlighted. "Also, take advantage of Pell grants. These were a saving grace for me."

Gain the courage to start again

Jake earned his associate degree in Business Management from San Antonio College in May 2023.

While his journey may not fit the conventional image of a college student, Jake is proud of his progress. He’s working towards becoming CFO and considering pursuing his bachelor's degree through AlamoU or at a local university.

?What sets Jake apart is his boldness in taking that first step and his belief in finding success.

"I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey. I've had 10 years to build real-world experience. I’ve met different people, learned through my mistakes, and through it all, I felt more ready to start school again."
