From Passion to Profession: Finding Your True Calling

From Passion to Profession: Finding Your True Calling

Have you ever been urged to pursue something more worthwhile by that quiet yet resolute voice? Years ago, I was in a similar situation, at a crossroads in my career. I want to talk about how I went from working in human resources to learning and development, resume writing, and career coaching today. I also want to show you how you can make your passion your career!

My Story: From HR to L&D, Resume Writing, and Career Coaching

I flourished in human resources for years, assisting businesses in creating cohesive teams and promoting a healthy work environment. However, as time passed, I came to understand that empowering people — assisting them in developing, learning, and realizing their professional goals — was my actual love.

It wasn't an overnight change. It started with a straightforward insight: I enjoyed creating training programs, writing powerful resumes, and coaching coworkers and my subordinates. These were hobbies that gave me energy, not just chores. I gradually began devoting more time to these pursuits, taking on side projects, and eventually making the entire switch to career coaching, resume writing, and learning and development.

One priceless lesson I learned from this experience is that work doesn't seem like work at all when it is in line with your passion.

How to Identify and Pursue Your Passion

Finding your true calling starts with self-reflection. Here are some steps to help you uncover what truly lights you up:

  • Look for Patterns: What activities make you lose track of time? What topics do you love discussing or learning about? These are clues to your passion.
  • Assess Your Strengths: What skills come naturally to you? Often, our passions align with what we are good at.
  • Experiment: Try new things. Volunteer, take online courses, or shadow someone in a field you are curious about.
  • Listen to Feedback: What do others say you’re great at? Sometimes, outsiders can see our potential more clearly than we can.

Practical Steps to Turn Passion Into Profession

Once you have identified your passion, the next step is to make it your profession. Here is how:

  • Start Small: Begin by integrating your passion into your current role or as a side hustle. For example, if you love writing, start a blog or offer freelance services.
  • Build Your Skills: Invest in courses, certifications, or mentorship to hone your skills and craft.
  • Network: Connect with people in your desired field. Attend industry events, join online communities, and seek out mentors.
  • Create a Plan: Set clear, actionable goals. Break them down into smaller steps and track your progress.
  • Take the Leap: When the time feels right, transition fully. This might mean starting your own business, shifting roles, or pivoting industries.

Engagement Tip: Learn from Others

One of the best ways to gain inspiration and insight is by hearing from those who have walked the path before you. In upcoming newsletters, I will be inviting guests who have successfully turned their passions into professions to share their stories. Their journeys will offer practical advice, motivation, and a reminder that you are not alone in this pursuit.

Final Thoughts

Finding your true calling is a journey, not a destination. It requires courage, curiosity, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. But trust me, the rewards — fulfillment, joy, and a sense of purpose — are worth it.

If you are ready to take the first step, start today. Reflect on what excites you, take small actions, and keep moving forward. And remember, I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Here is to turning your passion into your profession!

P.S. If you have made the leap successfully from passion to profession or are in the process of doing so, I would love to hear your story! Share your journey with me, and you might be featured in an upcoming newsletter.
