Crafting the perfect resume is essential, but have you noticed how the most significant opportunities often come from the relationships you build?
Here's the thing: people hire people. It's the personal connections, the conversations, the moments where you genuinely click with someone—that's what really opens doors.
But let's be honest, stepping out to make those connections can feel intimidating.
The fear of rejection, the awkward silences, the "What do I even say?" jitters—we've all been there.
So how do we move past the nerves and start building relationships that matter?
Let's dive into this topic this Post#15 in my November series on leadership growth.
1. Choose Your Moments Wisely
Not every event is worth your time. Instead of trying to attend every networking mixer under the sun, pick ones where you'll actually meet people who inspire you or align with your goals.
Do a little homework—who's going, what's the vibe, does it resonate with what you're aiming for?
Set small, achievable goals for each event. Maybe it's just one meaningful conversation. Remember, it's about quality over quantity.
2. Make It About Them
Do not overload them with your accomplishments and career facts. Instead, focus on the person in front of you.
Ask thoughtful questions, listen genuinely, and see how you can offer value—whether it's sharing an insight or connecting them with someone who can help.
When you show real interest in others, conversations flow naturally, and you build authentic relationships. That's way more memorable than a forced sales pitch.
3. Show Up (Authentically) Online
Your online presence is an extension of your personal brand. Share your thoughts, engage with others, and be consistent.
But keep it real—post about things that genuinely matter to you.
Engage with others not just to get noticed, but because you're interested in what they have to say. Authenticity goes a long way.
At the end of the day, while a stellar resume is great, it's those personal connections that really make the difference.
People want to work with someone they know, like, and trust.
