From Pain to Purpose: Stories of Strength and Hope
Today’s newsletter will take a slightly different turn. I'm confident it will still motivate and inspire, but perhaps in a more personal way...
When I was 14, my world shattered with the loss of my mother to cancer. I remember feeling enveloped by sadness for years, but I never fully considered the pain others might feel—my brother, my father, or my grandparents, who had buried their only other daughter just five years prior. As parents, we usually assume we will outlive our children. That's how it's supposed to be, but sometimes life charts a different course.
I’ve known parents who had to say goodbye too soon: a baby daughter whose heart wouldn’t heal, a beloved son unaware of the fentanyl lurking in the drugs he bought in an alley, or the parent whose child’s life was cut short by a drunk driver who veered into oncoming traffic.
Perhaps the worst pain of all comes with the prolonged warning that a child is terminally ill. With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), families often know for years that their child faces a relentless battle. DMD is a rare, genetic condition caused by a mutation that prevents the body from producing a crucial protein called dystrophin, which acts as a shock absorber for muscles. Without it, muscles become increasingly damaged and weakened, losing their ability to repair themselves. Over time, children with DMD will face challenges with walking and breathing, and eventually, the heart and lungs will cease to function. While there have been advancements in managing Duchenne, there is currently no cure.
I hadn’t heard of this disease until I met Bonnie, a strong-willed mother of three who refuses to let her son Peyton’s diagnosis slow either of them down. Peyton has climbed Half Dome, helped his parents run a marathon, and is currently a college freshman. He is incredibly lucky to be part of a supportive family that ensures every day is special, and his smile lights up every room he enters.

In response to their journey, Bonnie launched Peyton’s Project in conjunction with the Los Angeles Marathon to raise funds for research and provide essential equipment for families who can’t afford wheelchairs and other necessary items that improve daily life. This year, Bonnie and her friends are hosting a gala near Nashville to spread awareness about DMD and raise funds for additional children and research efforts.
If you’ve felt the pain of losing a child, I invite you to share your story. I’d love to feature more experiences like this to create a deeper understanding of how fragile we all are.
If you’d like to learn more about Peyton’s Project and donate to this worthy cause—or even better, join us at the beautiful Leiper’s Fork Distillery on Friday, November 15, to meet Peyton in person—click the link in the comments for more details.
