From Pain to Possibility: My Year of Healing After Spine Surgery

From Pain to Possibility: My Year of Healing After Spine Surgery

One year ago, I faced a life-changing challenge that I’ll never forget. As I reflect on this past year, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey and the incredible people who supported me through one of the most difficult times of my life.

?

Tomorrow marks a special milestone — not only is it Valentine’s Day, but it’s also the first anniversary of my surgery. A day I’ll always cherish, a day that gave me the chance to feel like myself again.

?

Before my spine surgery, each day felt like an ongoing battle. As much as I tried to hide it, the pain, uncertainty, and emotional toll were overwhelming. I often wondered if I’d ever find a solution or if pain would be something I’d endure forever. After exhausting every option, I widened my search and found a path to recovery.

?

I want to start by expressing my deepest gratitude to the ONZ Spine Surgeons team. Traveling across the Atlantic to Germany for surgery was a big decision, but your expertise, professionalism, and care gave me the confidence to take that leap. Your efforts gave me a second chance at a pain-free life and restored my faith in skilled medical professionals. Thank you for recognizing the severity of my situation and making my surgery a success.

?

To my post-op care team — Massage Therapist Krista Wasielewski (Three Tides Wellness), Physiotherapist Angela Tessmer (Waterloo Sports Medicine), and Personal Trainer Tyler Taylor (TNT Training) — your dedication has been invaluable. Each session brought me closer to recovery, improving my strength, mobility, and confidence. You went above and beyond, and I’m forever grateful.

?

To my family, friends, and colleagues — thank you for your patience, understanding, and constant encouragement. This journey tested me in ways I never imagined, but your love and support through every moment of doubt, fear, and pain made all the difference. I am forever grateful for your unwavering presence.

?

To my better half, Marissa Warner , your love and support mean more to me than I can express. Every day, you were my rock — standing by me through some of my darkest moments. Your strength, patience, and unwavering belief in me kept me going, even when I doubted myself. You’ve always been my biggest supporter, but through this journey, I’ve realized just how deeply our bond runs. I couldn’t have asked for a more loving, caring partner. Thank you for being by my side. I can’t wait to spend this Valentine’s Day with you.

?

Looking back on the year, I’m in awe of the moments I’ve been able to share with my son — activities I once thought were out of reach. Whether it was lacing up to play hockey, stepping on the ice to help coach, riding bikes, cliff jumping, tossing him around in the pool, or simply being present in ways I didn’t think possible, each of these moments fills my heart with joy and gratitude. These photos and videos remind me of how far I’ve come, not just physically, but emotionally. To have my health back — and to share these moments with my loved ones — is more than I could have ever imagined.

?

If you’re struggling with back pain or any physical limitations, please know that there may be solutions beyond what you've been told. Don’t settle for temporary fixes. It can feel overwhelming, but there are real solutions out there, and they might be just beyond your current options. I’m living proof that recovery is possible, no matter how daunting the journey may seem.

?

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to my entire support network, for being there through it all.

Hmmmmm. Thanks for sharing. But I gotta ask…can you play hockey with us again now!? Could use you this Tuesday LOL.

I can totally relate. Broke my neck 41 years ago. Wired and screwed back together. What takes you down will make you stronger.
