From Outdoors to Indoors: How a TradFi Trader was Sold to the Digital Assets Space.

  • Please share a short intro about yourself, where you’re from and what you do:?

My name is Victoria Makena , currently living in Nairobi. I am a trader and a writer. Currently volunteering at bitlyrics.

  • What inspired you to get into and stay in the blockchain space?

Back in 2016, I?had dropped out of college. My life shifted from outdoors to indoors and I started paying attention to the digital world. Having studied finance in college, I still had an interest in financial markets and that's how I bumped along, George Mangs, from Facebook. He was talking about Bitcoin a lot, back then.

I started doing my own research, read “Digital Gold" by Nathaniel Popper and I knew this was it. Never looked back since. I had also invested some money on Bittrex the same year and when the bull market came, I was completely sold to the space.

  • What was the biggest lesson from your (Web3) career, so far??

Uncensorable sovereign wealth is and always will be bitcoin.

  • Have you or someone you know ever been scammed in the Web3 space? Tell us what happened.?

I’ve never been scammed but recently a friend was scammed. He tried buying crypto from a seller on Instagram . I had warned him that it's risky and he should consider an exchange which at least has escrow. He ended up losing all his money.

We had a go on policy and regulations around blockchain:

How do you think blockchain can solve the economic and social problems in Kenya? And what does this mean for you (in your industry)??

Our problems can be solved if the government was to adopt bitcoin as a legal tender first. It would open up lots of opportunities and minimize the number of scams happening around.

Adopting the technology would also mean transparency and proper accountability, which would greatly boost how we interact with people and systems in the country.

Personally, it would be a win for me. I’d get to write more about how cryptography ruled the age of Aquarius. Haha

Your thoughts on the current situation in the global scene in regards to crypto/blockchain regulation.?

There has been a lot of development on crypto regulation. As a TradFi (Traditional Finance) trader though, I feel we have a long way to go. In traditional markets, they have tools and regulations to investigate who profited, which is yet to be seen in crypto.
