Have you ever been to a doctor and have told what kind of medicines to be prescribed to you rather, what your medical condition is and the challenges that you are facing?
Keeping this example in mind, being a talent development professional, we often have the stakeholders tell us what learning intervention should be done for their teams than letting us know what their key challenges are.
How do we address this?
Simple, stay focused. We got to move from a role of an order taker to a "Trusted Advisor"
How do we do this?
Ask powerful questions. For example: Tell us more about your work and business. Tell us about your top 3 challenges. How does this impact your top line and bottom line or P&L? What specific outcomes do you expect post the change in behavior of your team members?
Well, there are many more to add. The bottom line is not to clutter our thoughts and solutions with what we hear but to wear a consultant's hat and support the stakeholders.
Sometimes doctors don't even prescribe medicines and tell us that we will be alright and its true for learning interventions too. Education and learning intervention are not always the solution. Therefore, lets be a Trusted Advisor.
