I’ve seen firsthand how environment shapes behavior, opportunities, and dignity.
People aren’t just acting a certain way because they want to. They are responding to their conditions. If you’re surrounded by neglect, disinvestment, and struggle, it’s hard to break out of that without exposure to something different and access to real opportunities.
?? This is exactly why housing justice is deeper than just “affordable housing.” It’s about: ? The quality of the environment people are placed in. ? Access to resources that others take for granted. ? Breaking the cycle of economic and social exclusion.
What happens when only certain people have access to books, clean streets, job opportunities, and well-kept communities? Caste.
The Legacy of Operation Breadbasket
In the 1960s, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rev. Jesse Jackson launched Operation Breadbasket (OBB) as an economic empowerment program under the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Unlike today's corporate DEI initiatives, OBB focused on tangible economic gains for Black communities through jobs, business deals, and financial accountability.
?? Learn more about Operation Breadbasket:
How Operation Breadbasket Worked
? Negotiation with Corporations – Pressured businesses to hire and contract Black workers. ? Economic Boycotts – If companies refused to comply, Black consumers stopped spending. ? Black-Owned Business Growth – Pushed major companies to source from Black suppliers. ? Job Training & Leadership Development – Created real opportunities, not just empty promises.
Impact of OBB (1966-1971)
?? 2,000+ new jobs for Black workers in Chicago alone ?? $57 million in new income generated for Black communities ?? Empowered Black entrepreneurs through corporate contracts ?? Became the foundation for Jesse Jackson’s later work with the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition
Why We Need a New Operation Breadbasket
Today, DEI programs dominate corporate America, but where are the economic gains? Black businesses still struggle to access capital, homeownership gaps remain wide, and representation without resources changes nothing.
?? We need a new movement that: ?? Demands real financial investment—not just hiring reports. ?? Creates a modern economic boycotting strategy for accountability. ?? Develops Black-led businesses through corporate contracts. ?? Bridges the wealth gap with ownership, not tokenism.
DEI Distracts Us from the Real Problem—The Caste System
The truth is, DEI is just a corporate tool to maintain the status quo. It keeps people focused on representation, not power. Meanwhile, the caste system in America determines:
When Operation Breadbasket was active, it directly challenged the economic caste system by demanding jobs, contracts, and financial power.
?? What happened? The government and corporations shut it down and replaced real economic initiatives with symbolic programs like DEI.
?? Here’s the reality: If DEI worked, we wouldn’t have: ?? A widening racial wealth gap. ?? Black homeownership at its lowest in decades. ?? Predominantly Black neighborhoods still underdeveloped.
It’s time to stop asking for a seat at their table and start building our own.
