From One Kind of Care to Another

Looking to transition into the corporate world from being a bedside nurse, advanced practice nurse, other healthcare professional? Nursing careers can take you to creative places beyond the bedside (although sometimes a scary transition into the "unknown"). Certain specialties such as critical care, cardiology, emergency care, wound care, and diabetes education actually uniquely position nurses to be extremely valuable to many medical device and pharmaceutical corporations. I speak to numerous clinicians each week looking to make a transition into the medical device industry, so I wanted to share some trends that frequently come up when discussing the traditional "Clinical Specialist" role, and also highlight other unique opportunities for healthcare professionals within the industry.

For the clinical specialist role (also sometimes referred to as Clinical Educator, Clinical Consultant, Clinical Education Specialist, etc), there's a few requirement consistencies for the role, and are quite perfect for nurses who want to educate, present, and be a subject matter expert rather than be responsible for direct sales - although, always a career advancement opportunity should the skill set or desire arise.

  1. Be prepared to be mobile - an element of tech savviness is needed when you're on the go and working remotely, creating education content, or presenting to physicians and other key staff on devices.
  2. Don't be afraid to speak up and show your personality! Being able to present to a room or take charge of an OR is essential when educating and advising on how to use certain products within the industry.
  3. Travel is the norm. Period. Clinical specialists are mobile positions,?so expect to spend significant time traveling locally, regionally, or nationally! Being comfortable with the uncomfortable is key.
  4. Regulation is regular, since health care is heavily regulated by the Federal Government, these positions also often require regulatory reporting or audit duties as well. Be familiar with any regulations pertaining to the device, medication, or equipment you will be representing.

Not looking to travel? There are also other unique opportunities on the research side of medtech - these roles range from medical science liaisons, clinical research associates, and more.?Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions about breaking into the industry from healthcare - I'd love to connect and help!
