Milburn (2022) recently emphasized the effective of onboarding to employee retention in an article posted in Forbes magazine. Recent changes in the labor market have given for an increasing proportion of people, a way to express a commitment to fostering social and environmental change. A 2019 survey found that three-quarters of millennials would accept a smaller salary to work for an environmentally responsible company. When social and environmental purpose is treated as a foundation rather than an afterthought, it creates a positive feedback loop in which employees internalize company culture and, in turn, act in ways that reinforce and promote said culture. Effective onboarding strategies are critical to beginning this process.
Onboarding allows new employees to learn about the business culture or the organization’s “personality”. The business culture:
·????????Drives engagement
·????????Attracts and helps retain talent, and
·????????Affects organizational performance.
Achieving this part of the onboarding process depends on the leadership style within the organization as a whole or within individual business units and/or teams, organizational policies, and transparency.
The third segment during the onboarding process entails fairness and consistency. Fairness refers to respect of organizational justice with regards to process and outcome impartiality. Some factors related to fairness include mutual respect and honest communication. Consistency has to do with providing the same standard of work throughout projects or assignments. It impacts:

·????????The communication with others.
As this month is mental health awareness month, properly onboarding new team members plays a major role in increasing employee retention. New employees will have the chance to observe the business culture, fairness and consistency within processes and procedures. Early signs of stress and workplace bullying could also be detected. Statistics have shown that one in four individuals have problems with mental illness. Relentless stress without any resiliency are causes of ill mental well-being. Suicide rates are very high across the world and increasingly there is high proportion of people who wish to die. Men die more often than women and these deaths are now associated to an expression called deaths of despair caused by drugs, alcohol, and suicide.

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” They assert that physical and mental well-being is a human right, enabling a life without limitation or restriction. Health may also be defined as the ability to adapt and manage physical, mental, and social challenges throughout life.?There are many ways society addresses physical health, but mental health and mental well-being is not addressed in the same manner.
