Ciao Friends,
I’m Rebecca Fitzsimmons, founder of Tactical Harmony, and over the past two decades, I’ve learned that leadership is about more than just getting results—it’s about how you get them. From my years as an NCIS Special Agent, leading complex, dynamic missions around the world, to my experience as a senior leader in the tech industry, I’ve discovered one core truth: the most effective leaders aren’t the ones who “manage.” They’re the ones who inspire, empower, and maintain harmony in their personal and professional lives. This newsletter, The Holistic Leader’s Playbook, is designed for ambitious professionals and leaders who want to excel in all domains of their life, both professionally and personally. It’s for those who know that authentic leadership requires more than just hard skills—it demands emotional intelligence, integrity, and grit.?
I vividly remember multiple missions in NCIS where there was immense pressure and several moving parts. As a leader, I wasn’t just responsible for directing the mission—I had to ensure everyone stayed focused and safe. In those moments, it wasn’t just tactical skills that mattered, but emotional intelligence, trust, and my ability to remain grounded despite the chaos. Those experiences shaped how I view leadership today and how I now help leaders achieve clarity and impact under pressure.
The five lessons I’m about to share are drawn from my unique experiences and will help you lead with greater impact while staying aligned with your core values and vision. If you're ready to level up your leadership in a way that supports both your career success and personal fulfillment, these lessons will show you the path forward.
Lesson 1: Trust is Earned, Not Given
During my time as an NCIS Special Agent, I quickly learned that trust is the currency of leadership. Trust isn’t automatic—I had to earn it. How? By consistently showing up, being transparent, and aligning my actions with my words.
Actionable Takeaway: Building trust takes time and intention. As a leader:
Lesson 2: Grit is Your Greatest Asset in Uncertainty
No matter how much you plan - things can always go in a different direction at the drop of a hat. I remember several times in which this was the case. Everything from unexpected intel, changing circumstances, and pressure from every side. It was my grit—the determination to keep moving forward in the face of adversity—that got us through.
As leaders, we often face our own version of uncertainty. Whether it’s navigating shifting business environments or managing high-stakes decisions, grit becomes your greatest asset when things don’t go as expected.
Actionable Takeaway: To build grit as a leader:
Lesson 3: Emotional Intelligence Is Your Superpower
I’ve seen firsthand how leaders with high emotional intelligence (EQ) are the ones who inspire loyalty and create lasting impact. I’ve seen many times in my career where emotions were running high and tensions flared. It wasn’t my rank or authority that brought the team back together—it was my ability to listen, empathize, and regulate my own emotions under pressure.
Actionable Takeaway: To improve your emotional intelligence:
Lesson 4: Authenticity Over Authority
Leadership isn’t just about holding power—it’s about showing up as your authentic self. In my NCIS days, I found that my most effective leadership moments didn’t come from exercising authority, but from being genuine. When I led with authenticity, my team felt more connected and more empowered.
Actionable Takeaway: As a leader:
Lesson 5: Leadership Begins Within
Before you can lead others, you must first lead yourself. The transition from my NCIS career to tech to becoming a holistic leadership coach taught me that leadership starts from within. The more aligned you are with your values and your purpose, the more effectively you can inspire others as you are living and embodying your own truth.
So the within, so the without.
Internal work drives external success.
Actionable Takeaway: Self-leadership is the foundation for all great leadership. To cultivate it:
