How to Crack the Twitter Algorithm

On March 31, 2023, Twitter took the groundbreaking step of open-sourcing their algorithm.

Developers have spent the last few days analyzing it to find the answer. So, how does the Twitter algorithm work?

My favorite breakdown comes from programmer ?Steven Tey?:

There are a few factors that determine if your tweet will appear on someone's "For You" page. These are calculated by a heavy-ranker algorithm, which receives various features describing the Tweet + the user whose timeline is being ranked for, and outputs binary predictions about how the user will engage with the Tweet. Below are some of the probabilities that the algorithm outputs, along with their respective sentiments and weights:

THE THREE D'S OF LIVE-STREAM STRATEGY

No alt text provided for this image

I just spoke at PI Live Miami about live social commerce, and one of the things we touched on was the unique set of challenges that come with live-streaming for brands.

Think about it.

When was the last time you made a point of watching something when it aired?

Maybe the Super Bowl?

It's incredibly difficult to gain traction.

At its core, there are three big challenges any brand (or creator) needs to overcome to find success with live:

  • Discovery
  • Dynamic Storytelling
  • Dependability

So, what does that mean, and how do you overcome these obstacles?

DISCOVERY

You're only live for a moment, and the content isn't evergreen, so getting people to tune in is key.

Get the word out and hammer the message home over and over. Work with collaborators (creators, etc) as well as promote it on your channels time and time again.

DYNAMIC STORYTELLING

Create an experience that a viewer can easily dip in at any time and be engaged.

Odds are that a viewer is not going to follow a livestream all the way from the beginning to end. As a result, traditional storytelling techniques don't work.

You need to follow a format that allows for a viewer to easily jump in at any time and be engaged.

This is why we've seen gaming do so well. Viewers can jump in at any moment and see some action and enjoy the experience.

Additionally, the box break format (popularized by WhatNot) works well. In a box break, a box of trading cards is opened live on camera, and the cards are distributed among participants who have bought a spot in the break. It builds suspense and mystery.

What's in the box?!

You can wrap your head around it quickly as a viewer, etc.

DEPENDABILITY

The best creators typically have a set posting schedule. The audience is trained on when to show up and expect content.

The same is true with live.

Set a schedule and stick to it.

Show up time and time again to hammer home to teach viewers when to expect you. By consistently delivering engaging and entertaining content at the same time each week, day, and time, you can build trust and loyalty with your audience.

For success in live social commerce, discoverability, dynamic storytelling, and dependable content are the three D's you can't ignore.

Described as, "Your daily dose of what's going on in AI" it does an incredible job of compiling all the juicy updates, new products and tools in one neat little update. I must bookmark a dozen new ones each day.

Check it out.?

How do we find out our standing with the algorithm at the moment? How do we change our topics/ circles without upsetting our algo overlord? These are 2 questions that came up when I first went through the algorithm myself. Curious to see if anyone has discovered a solution for this?
