From my archive, Ghana: "Jumbo Ex-Gratia and the Gnashing of Teeth

From my archive, Ghana: "Jumbo Ex-Gratia and the Gnashing of Teeth." It was my reply to former Ghanaian president Kufuor who complained that citizens complain too much.

Excerpts: "This happened again last week when it was reported that Mr. John Kufuor, the ruler under whom Ghana became the vassal state of the imperialists, and the same man that took Ghana into HIPC, and the very same man who told us that we are lazy and that corruption is older than Adam, came to tell the world that things are hard in Ghana and that there is gnashing of teeth in the land.

Tchaah!

This happened again last week when it was reported that Mr. John Kufuor, the ruler under whom Ghana became the vassal state of the imperialists, and the same man that took Ghana into HIPC, and the very same man who told us that we are lazy and that corruption is older than Adam, came to tell the world that things are hard in Ghana, and that there is gnashing of teeth in the land.

This is how it was captured in the press: “Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says current economic hardship in Ghana has left Ghanaians “gnashing”.

Everywhere people are gnashing their teeth; they don’t sleep well, because as the dawn breaks on us we wonder where are we going to get the chop money for our families,” he stated.

The former President was speaking at the 1st graduation ceremony of Quickening Word Baptist Church International at Kasoa in the Central Region.

According to him, every Ghanaian wakes up each morning with the headache of where to get money from because businesses are collapsing and it is generally difficult to come by money, meanwhile the cost of living has gone very high.

Former President Kufuor also expressed worry about the high rate of graduate unemployment in the country under the Mahama government.

There’s so much unemployment. Even when we are able to take our children through school and they pass successfully they do not know where to get employment.

The former president argued that the recent letter written by the Armed Robbers Association of Ghana (ARAG) to the residents of Agape in Accra is because of the economic hardship and massive unemployment in the country.” – https://news.myjoyonline.com/politics/2014/February-9th/ghanaians-are-gnashing-ex-president-kufuor.php

I try to avoid personal insults in this column and I will not start with former President Kufuor.

But if there is one person who is singularly unqualified to pontificate on bad economy, unemployment, it is Mr. JAK Kufuor.

Correct me if I am wrong, Ghana was not an Oasis when he ran the show. Rescue me if I am mistaken but Mr. Kufuor did not open a single industrial factory in his eight years in power. And the man who [personally] sold Ghana Telecom and its ancillary companies for a song, and allowed his ministers to treat public properties like war booty is morally unqualified to pontificate to us.

And lest it is forgotten, I republish below the piece I wrote (in 2008) on the scandalous ex-gratia Mr. Kufuor awarded himself on leaving office like we have something we should be grateful to him for.
