From MTV & Mixtapes to the AI Revolution: A No-Nonsense Approach for Staying Relevant, Authentic, and Keeping Your Soul.

"It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine." - R.E.M.

Who else remembers the days of MTV when music videos were the window to the world and mixtapes were the ultimate expression of personality and affection? If you're nodding along, you're probably part of my tribe – now navigating the uncharted waters of the AI revolution. As R.E.M. sang, "It's the end of the world as we know it," but like them, we feel fine—or at least, we're trying to.

I also grew up recording my favorite songs off the radio, mastering the art of the mixtape, and now I find myself in the middle of an AI-driven corporate world. Every mid-life bada$$ I talk to is adapting but if we’re honest, this unstoppable journey from analog to digital epitomizes an “elephant-in-the-room dilemma” - staying relevant and authentic in a world where algorithms seem to make more decisions than us humans.

"I’m not arguing, I’m just explaining why I’m right." – Unknown

I feel like we need a no-nonsense approach to these feelings that we don’t really talk about because it makes us feel like we’re old (gasp) or “not with the program” or “out of touch” --- but we also crave a straightforward, practical, and direct strategy or method that cuts through hype, avoids fluff, and focuses on what genuinely works. While we are known for our pragmatism, we also have healthy skepticism towards overly idealistic promises, and we are unbending in our need for authenticity – So what now?

"I won't back down, no I won't back down. You can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won't back down." – Tom Petty

People – let’s get real here, we don’t know how to back down from a challenge. Since the era of MTV and mixtapes, we have successfully navigated several significant transitions to transformative technology, showcasing our adaptability and resilience. Top of mind – say yes in the comments if you feel this -

  • From Analog to Digital: We witnessed the shift from analog to digital in almost every aspect of our daily life. From vinyl records and cassette tapes to CDs, then to MP3 players, and eventually to streaming services for music and video – been there done that. In fact, I have this little red box labeled “Sentimental Items” that has not one but THREE mix tapes and CDs from ex’s with hand-written song titles and the artist. Say what?! Yup.

We also adapted from VHS tapes to DVDs (remember those Blockbuster fees? sheesh) and now streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu. This shift fundamentally changed how we consume media, communicate, and interact with technology.

  • The Rise of the Internet and Social Media: We were at the forefront of the internet revolution – I remember in college when information and communication were relatively slow and limited to embracing the “World Wide Web”, email, and eventually social media platforms. That unmistakable sound of our early internet days of dial-up connections to broadband, Wi-Fi, and now our smartphones. Who else here can confess to having had a “MySpace” account (she raises her arm- ha!) and to the dominance of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, and heroically integrating these platforms into both our personal and professional lives. We are, however, forever grateful for no digital evidence of our shenanigans from the 80s and 90s!
  • Mobile Technology and Smartphones: The adoption of mobile technology and smartphones has been a transformative shift for us. We grew up in the era of landlines and the first bulky mobile phones to the sleek, powerful smartphones that are now central to our life. Now, it’s how we work, shop, access information, and entertain ourselves. In fact – here’s a funny for you - "I finally realized that people are prisoners of their phones... that’s why it’s called a 'cell' phone." – Unknown. I’m sorry, I had to!

So what now?

"I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." – Pablo Picasso.

Each of these transitions represented a leap in technology that we not only adapted to but also embraced, integrating new tools and platforms into our lives while maintaining a critical eye towards their impact and utility. Our journey from MTV and mixtapes to today's digital age showcases our ability to navigate change, leverage new opportunities, and remain relevant in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

1.????? Balance Technology with Human Touch

You value the authentic connections you formed in a pre-digital era, and the rise of AI, with all its efficiency, sometimes feels like it's encroaching on those genuine human experiences. You’re not alone in wondering how to integrate AI without losing the soul of your interactions, both at work and in your personal life. The key? Use AI to handle the routine, free yourself and your team to engage more deeply with clients and each other—enhance, not replace, the human touch.

?2.????? Lifelong Learning and Skill Adaptation

Let’s chat about the challenge of keeping up. The pace of technological change can be daunting, and for many of us, there's the added pressure of showing our digital-native colleagues that we’re more than capable. Let’s embrace our mindset of lifelong learning, viewing AI as a tool for growth. By aligning our natural resilience for learning with our interests—perhaps a course in AI ethics or a workshop on leveraging AI for creative problem-solving—we can turn potential obsolescence into an opportunity.

3.????? Ethical Considerations and Privacy Concerns

"With or without you," sang U2, and sometimes I feel this way about AI—torn between its benefits and the ethical dilemmas it presents. We are acutely aware of privacy concerns and the potential for bias within AI algorithms. An approach? We can advocate for transparency and participate in discussions about AI ethics, ensuring that our folks, partners, or company uses technology in a way that aligns with our values and protects individual rights.

4.????? Career Transition and Job Security

AI's potential to automate has many of us rethinking our career path. Rather than viewing AI as a threat, let’s look at how it can augment our role, identifying skills that AI can't replicate—creativity, empathy, strategic thinking—and making them our superpowers. Explore new roles that leverage these human-centric skills, ensuring that your place in an AI-driven world is secure.

5.????? Maintaining Authentic Leadership

Leading in an AI-enhanced workplace means walking the talk for us. We can leverage AI for decision-making and efficiency, but not at the expense of our team's well-being. We can ensure our leadership style remains authentic, prioritizing people over processes and fostering an environment where technology supports, not supplants, human ingenuity.

6.????? Personal Identity and Self-Perception

Finally, there's the existential bit. As AI becomes a bigger part of our lives, are you also wondering about our place in this new world. ?A strategy? Emphasizing the uniquely human traits that AI can't mimic and engaging in activities that feed your soul—be it vinyl record collecting or volunteering. These remind us of the irreplaceable value of what made us who we are - valuing human experiences and connections first and foremost.

Your Turn to Navigate the AI Revolution

You’re not alone. Navigating the balance between embracing AI and maintaining your authentic self is a journey many of us are on. Through my coaching, I help leaders find that balance, leveraging technology to enhance our lives and work without losing what makes us uniquely human.

Let’s navigate the AI revolution together, keeping our souls intact and our mixtapes ready for the next chapter.

I really liked the article. AI is one of those areas where you can see the great opportunities it brings but it is tempered with their equal potential for harm. And, when I think about the changes you mentioned in the article (and, yes, I was one of those that had the huge wireless phone and the mixed tapes) the more we realize that each change cycles through faster than the one before. That is definitely the case with AI. I think the best that we can do to keep it more in the camp of being useful rather than an emerging threat is to put guardrails around its use and try to slow down implementation so we can look at the impacts of the current AI applications. AI is the future, but it is up to us to determine how responsibly we implement it.
