A Lesson Every Developer Should Learn: Always Back Up the Website Before Hand-Over
Recently, I completed a project for a client, delivering a fresh, functional, and fully optimized website. As part of my workflow, I arranged a meeting with the client to walk them through the site, explain its functionalities, and hand over access.
However, what happened next was a reminder of the unexpected challenges we developers can face.
The client, eager to explore the site's features, logged into the admin panel. While experimenting, they accidentally reversed some crucial functionalities. The situation escalated when they accessed the C-Panel and unintentionally deleted the entire website. Since this was a fresh build, no backup was taken beforehand—leaving them with no option but to start from scratch.
The client approached me again, visibly distressed and disappointed. Seeing their concern, I reassured them with a smile: “Don’t worry, I have a backup.â€
I had created a full backup of the site before handing over the credentials. With just a few steps, the website was restored, and the client’s relief was priceless. They were so happy that they even gave me a tip for saving the day.
Why Backing Up is a Must
This experience underscores an important lesson for every developer: Always create a full backup of the website before handing it over to the client.
Clients may not always be familiar with the technical aspects of managing a website, and mistakes can happen. By having a back-up:
- You safeguard your work.
- You maintain your client’s trust.
- You save yourself from potential headaches later.
Pro Tip for Developers
Whenever you deliver a project:
- Take a Full Back-Up – This includes files, databases, and settings.
- Educate the Client – Share basic knowledge on managing their site and the risks of certain actions.
- Offer a Maintenance Plan – Many clients prefer leaving technical tasks to professionals.
This simple practice of backing up can turn a potential disaster into an opportunity to strengthen your reputation as a reliable and proactive developer.
