From mine to smelter – Sauli’s development journey continues at Boliden
In the heart of Dalarna, Sauli Rytk?nen has found his way onto Boliden’s trainee program. The 26-year-old process engineer has already gained valuable experience in the mining industry, but the program offers him a unique opportunity to combine theory with practice and expand his knowledge.
Sauli graduated from the European Mining Course program in 2022 and holds a Master of Science in Mining Engineering. During his studies, he got the chance to experience working as a drilling and blasting engineer for Boliden in Kevitsa and an operator in Harjavalta. When the opportunity then arose to apply for the trainee program, he was quick to jump at the chance.
One of the things that Sauli appreciates most about Boliden is the collaborative atmosphere. He feels there isn’t a rigid hierarchy. Instead, everyone works together towards common goals.
“It really is an inspiring environment. Everyone’s contributions are important and you really feel involved in what you do.”
“It feels like the perfect start to my career. I’ve been able to learn how to handle real-world challenges and collaborate effectively within a team. I feel truly inspired when I think about how the program will help me develop even more,” he says.
A varied working day
As a process engineer at the Garpenberg mine, Sauli has a varied working day. His days start with a morning meeting with the team and can continue with practical work at the concentrator, data analysis, and discussions with Boliden’s smelters.
“It’s the perfect mix of theory and practice. I’m learning new things every day and get the opportunity to apply my knowledge in a creative way. I also like ‘getting my hands dirty’ and being out and about in the operation.”
Sauli highlights his manager, Tomas Persson, as an important mentor and support person in the program. They meet up regularly to discuss Sauli’s development and how he can approach new challenges.
“Tomas has a strong belief in my potential and gives me the support I need to achieve my goals,” says Sauli.

The educational journey continues
He is looking forward to continuing his journey on Boliden’s trainee program as it enters the next phase, with internship period two, which will see him leave Garpenberg to spend time working in Kokkola.
Sauli will focus on the link between the zinc mine in Garpenberg and the zinc smelter in Kokkola. He will work on leaching and calcination processes and gain insight into how the zinc concentrate from Garpenberg is refined to produce the final product.
“It’s a unique opportunity to learn more about the entire chain and how our different roles are linked. By examining the processes at the smelter, I can identify patterns and areas for improvement that could benefit both Garpenberg and Kokkola.”
Working together for better results
Sauli views his internship as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the different parts of the Boliden Group. By expanding their network in Kokkola and sharing information and experiences, they can find new, innovative solutions that improve efficiency and profitability.
“It’s great that Boliden offers the trainee program, which gives us the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another. All of us trainees have now met on-site in Boliden and it’s always rewarding to share experiences. Although we have different jobs and assignments, we can identify useful contacts and talk about how we have adapted. But it’s also great to just talk and relax together,” he says.
In June, Sauli will return to Garpenberg to work in various positions and teams. He is looking forward to using his new knowledge and experience in his upcoming work.
