Procurement in Kenya is in many ways manual, paper and labour-intensive, and very costly. The image below shows us preparing a bid response a few years ago. We printed over 4,000 pages, organised, bound, paginated and submitted manually. I am sure this has been your experience too.?

But this is not just a suppliers' problem; it is a problem common to all procurement stakeholders, suppliers, procurement entities and supply chain financiers.?

When we met with procuring entities, they informed us they faced the same challenges suppliers faced. They had to prepare the tender documents, receive tender responses, evaluate the responses, award, manage contracts and receive goods manually. Surprisingly, financial institutions face the same challenges too. They have informed us that the cost of due diligence is too high for them to prioritise financing suppliers who seek supply chain financing from them. Their due diligence processes are also paper and labour-intensive, leading to the SME finance gap experienced by suppliers across sub-Saharan Africa.
