From Local Roots to National Impact: The Growing Journey of Canadian Women of Colour Leadership Network

Canadian Women of Colour Leadership Network (CWCLN) began with a simple yet powerful vision: to address the lack of representation, support, and opportunities for Black and racialized women in leadership roles. From its inception, CWCLN has worked to create spaces where these women could connect, grow, and thrive—an endeavor that started with local efforts and has steadily evolved into a growing national movement.

In its early days, CWCLN focused on fostering connections within local communities. Recognizing the isolation many Black and racialized women and femmes experienced in their professional and personal journeys, the network prioritized creating opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and empowerment. By meeting with women locally and sharing its mission, CWCLN laid the groundwork for a strong and supportive community while simultaneously addressing systemic barriers to leadership.

A significant turning point in CWCLN’s journey was its participation in the Women Deliver 2019 Mobilization Canada campaign. This involvement amplified CWCLN’s voice on a national stage, aligning its mission with broader efforts to advance women’s rights, health, and leadership. Events like the Senate of Canada reception provided opportunities to connect with like-minded organizations and share CWCLN’s vision for representation, mentorship, and capacity building. These opportunities helped broaden the network’s reach and laid the foundation for its growth from a local initiative into a national presence.

Notably, Women of Influence, a respected national publication, recognized CWCLN’s efforts during the Women Deliver Mobilization. The publication highlighted the organization’s impact and its vital role in advocating for Black and racialized women in Canada. This recognition further solidified CWCLN’s growing influence and commitment to driving change.

As CWCLN grew, its mission expanded to address the holistic needs of Black and racialized women and femmes. This led to the development of four core pillars that now guide the network’s work:

1. Leadership and Professional Development

CWCLN is committed to equipping Black and racialized women with the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to excel in leadership roles, whether as entrepreneurs, professionals, or community leaders.

2. Economic Development

Recognizing that financial empowerment is key to sustainable growth, CWCLN offers programs focused on financial literacy, investment education, and entrepreneurship. These initiatives provide the tools and resources needed to overcome systemic barriers to economic security and build long-term prosperity.

3. Wellness and Holistic Care

CWCLN acknowledges that empowerment begins with well-being. Programs centered on mental, emotional, and physical health, such as wellness workshops and holistic care initiatives, ensure that women are supported in every aspect of their lives.

4. Community Partnerships

Building relationships across sectors is integral to CWCLN’s vision. By collaborating with nonprofits, businesses, grassroots organizations, and government entities, CWCLN creates impactful programs and strengthens its capacity to advocate for Black and racialized women. Partnerships are vital not only for growth but also for driving systemic change.

CWCLN’s work locally continues to be an essential part of its mission, allowing the organization to stay connected to the communities it serves. However, its national footprint is growing daily. The network now connects women across Canada, amplifying their voices and advocating for systemic change on a broader scale.

Ongoing Advocacy Campaign

CWCLN is actively working to advocate for systemic change through its ongoing advocacy campaign. This campaign seeks to amplify the voices of Black and racialized women, address systemic barriers, and create actionable pathways to equity across sectors.
