"From Learning to Living: Making Soft Skills Stick"

Hello Tech Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the latest edition of Keep Calm and Tech On. Today, we're tackling a big question: How do we make skills—especially soft skills—stick? Whether you’re learning to lead better, communicate effectively, or collaborate in a hybrid world, soft skills can be tricky to develop and even harder to retain. So, how do we move from “I get it” to “I live it”?

Let’s break it down.

?? The Journey from Awareness to Habit

We often think learning ends when we grasp the concept, but real transformation begins much later. Understanding a new concept is just step one. The challenge lies in weaving it into your daily routine until it becomes second nature. That’s not easy, but it’s doable—with the right approach.

Here’s what it takes:

?? 1. Understand the ‘Why’ Behind It

Before any skill sticks, you need to connect with its purpose. Why does this skill matter to you? How does it align with your personal or professional goals?

For example:

  • Learning active listening? It’s not just to nod along but to build deeper trust with your team.
  • Practicing concise communication? It’s to save time and make an impact in meetings.

When the “why” clicks, the effort to develop the skill feels worthwhile.

?? 2. Practice, Practice, Practice

You’ve heard it before: practice makes perfect. But it’s not just about repetition—it’s about intentional repetition. This means:

  • Applying what you’ve learned to real situations.
  • Reflecting on what worked and what didn’t.
  • Iterating until the skill becomes seamless.

Think about public speaking. It’s not enough to watch a TED Talk and feel inspired. You have to stand in front of a group, stumble, recover, and improve.

?? 3. Make It Part of Your Routine

Soft skills only stick when they’re a natural part of your day. How do you do this?

  • Set reminders: Start every meeting with the intention to practice your skill.
  • Use triggers: Pair the skill with something you already do. For example, use your commute to reflect on how you handled challenges during the day.

Over time, what feels awkward or forced will become instinctive.

?? 4. Seek Feedback

Feedback is the fertilizer for growth. Without it, you’re operating in the dark. Here’s how to approach it:

  • Ask for it often: After you practice, seek constructive input from a trusted colleague or mentor.
  • Be open to it: Feedback isn’t always easy to hear, but it’s the only way to grow.
  • Give it, too: When you’re offering feedback to others, you refine your understanding and build your own skills.

?? 5. Build a Feedback-Friendly Environment

Skills thrive in a culture of trust. When people feel safe to give and receive honest feedback, everyone benefits. Start by modeling this behavior:

  • Share your own learning journey.
  • Create spaces where others can practice and grow without fear of judgment.

?? 6. Accountability Through Connection

Having a group of peers or mentors who are on the same journey can make all the difference. Accountability helps you stay consistent, and learning from others’ experiences adds depth to your understanding.

?? 7. Celebrate the Wins

Don’t wait for perfection. Celebrate progress, however small. Each time you successfully apply a new skill, take a moment to recognize your growth. This keeps the momentum going.

?? Why This Matters

In a world that values innovation and adaptability, soft skills are no longer “nice-to-haves”—they’re must-haves. But developing them isn’t about quick fixes or one-off training sessions. It’s about embedding them into who we are, how we work, and how we interact.

Let’s make this a conversation. What soft skill are you working on right now? And how are you making it stick?

Thank you for being part of Keep Calm and Tech On. Here’s to a future where we don’t just learn—we transform.

Soft skills are foundational for leadership. And as you mentioned Deepa Kartha, they don't stick unless we practice and apply them.
