?? From Law Firm to In-House: Insights for Aspiring Senior Counsel ??
Hello, LinkedIn Community! ??♀???♂?
Welcome to the second installment of our series, "Corporate Counsel Chronicles: Navigating the In-House Journey." Today, we delve into the key skills required for a smooth transition from a law firm to an in-house role. Let's embark on this learning journey together!
1?? Effective Communicator:
Senior counsels need to be comfortable asking for help, escalating issues, and summarizing key activities in an organized manner (think: weekly updates and reports??). They must be adept at breaking down complex problems and recalibrating their focus as needed, all while demonstrating a strong grasp of the core business areas with whom they collaborate. Giving and soliciting feedback, and acting on development opportunities, are crucial to this role. ??
2?? Effective Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Building trust and influence with colleagues across departments is a must. This includes considering stakeholders' input when developing new strategies and persuading colleagues to buy into proposed initiatives. It's all about fostering strong, collaborative cross-functional relationships. ??
3?? Effective Team Player:
In-house counsel should provide high-quality, clear, and valuable legal thought partnership to the legal team. They should coach and mentor other legal colleagues, and partner with them to craft win/win opportunities. The goal? To achieve good results for the company while showcasing individual talents and abilities. ??

Aspiring Senior Counsels need to be driven, autonomous, and consistently resolve matters to the company's benefit. They should establish performance metrics to measure outcomes and constantly enhance service delivery to the company. Holding oneself and others accountable for setting and achieving high expectations, meeting deadlines, and delivering results, are key to this role. ??
5?? Leadership:
Senior Counsels should be excellent resources for gathering knowledge and expertise while providing training, guidance, and support within their department. They should also be responsible for the growth and development of direct reports. ??
