Many of us struggle with the complexities of global documentation. Deadlines loom, budgets tighten, and stakeholders demand more with less. This is where Simplified Technical English (STE), formerly known as Simplified English, comes in. While the official term is the somewhat daunting ASD-STE100, they all refer to the same powerful standard, and it's a standard rooted in decades of experience across various industries.
Let's face it, juggling business requirements on top of our daily workload is a constant challenge. Time-to-market pressures, potential downtime, and cost-cutting mandates force us to find efficiencies. We strive for supplier independence without compromising quality, on-time delivery, and budget constraints. It's a never-ending balancing act.
Surprisingly, standards aren't always embraced in the documentation world. While technical writers and engineers understand the importance of standards that support clear, consistent documentation. Yet, upper management doesn't always share this enthusiasm since budget holders and decision-makers may not recognise the critical role that documentation plays. They do not always have the same kind of regard for documentation that we know is very well deserved, and necessary. In this respect, the European Union specifically states in its regulations that documentation is an integral part of your product.
Documentation is essential, but it often gets relegated to the last minute. When a project runs late or over budget, documentation becomes an afterthought, and corners are cut. Yet, we still want to deliver a quality product with user-friendly instructions. This is where STE shines.
