ITEOM Wellness Corner:
Always remember: IN & OUT
With the world wizzing by, we thought of kicking it "old school" and revisit an often-overlooked aspect of well-being—mental self-care. While the latest trends, like ice baths, bio grazing and every other work out under the sun are gaining popularity, traditional practices such as breath-work remain powerful tools for maintaining mental health.
Let's take a look at some Breathwork Techniques that we could do, sitting at a desk, waiting for the next meeting, deep in the work-mode-zone, before we doze off and any time in between:
- Wim Hof Method: This practice combines breathing exercises, cold exposure, and meditation to boost energy levels, reduce stress, and enhance immune function. Its simplicity and profound impact make it a staple for many leaders seeking mental clarity and resilience.
- Box Breathing: Used by Navy SEALs, this method involves a rhythmic pattern of inhaling, holding, exhaling, and holding again, each for a count of four. It's renowned for calming the mind, improving focus, and reducing anxiety—ideal for high-pressure environments.
- Holotropic Breathwork: Through deep, rapid breathing, this technique helps access altered states of consciousness, offering emotional release and personal insight. It's valuable for addressing unresolved trauma and enhancing emotional well-being.
Sounds simple, yet not many of us really make a conscious effort to implement them to see and experience change. So here's why we need to focus on giving in to the most natural habit of being a human- BREATHING:
- Improved Mental Clarity: Enhances focus and decision-making, crucial for leaders and decision-makers.
- Stress Reduction: Lowers cortisol levels and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping manage stress and prevent burnout.
- Emotional Release: Helps release pent-up emotions and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
As we celebrate Labor Day, let’s remember the importance of these timeless practices. They complement modern techniques and provide valuable ways to proactively manage mental health, ensuring we stay balanced and resilient in our high-pressure roles. And keep in mind - when all else fails... JUST BREATHE!
