From Korea to the world: SAMICK's global impact on linear technology

At SAMICK, the dedication to advancing linear technology goes beyond mere ambition; it’s a deeply ingrained corporate mission. The Korean manufacturer aspires to be recognized as the “Global Small Giant in Automation Industries,” a vision that propels them to expand their global network, leveraging their already established market leadership in Korea. Recently, we’ve begun stocking a comprehensive range of SAMICK products, including various linear bushings, linear ball bearings such as the specialized CLB series, as well as associated units and shaft trestles.

In an insightful interview with Mr. Woo Suk Choi, General Manager of SAMICK’s overseas sales team, we explore SAMICK’s product portfolio and its significant influence on industries worldwide, with a particular focus on the European market.

Mr. Choi, could you provide us with an overview of SAMICK’s product range and its history in manufacturing linear products?

Woo Suk Choi: SAMICK PRECISION was founded in Daegu, Korea, in 1987, marking a pivotal moment as the first Korean company to manufacture and export linear ball bushings domestically. Today, we command over 60% of the market share in Korea, establishing ourselves as leaders in the linear motion industry. Our product portfolio is characterized by diversity and innovation, encompassing Linear Ball Bushings, Polygonal Guides, and Linear Actuators. Linear Ball Bushings are available in various configurations, including Asian type (LM), European type (LME), Self-aligning type (SUPER), and Compact type (CLB).

In addition, our polygonal guides, comprising Guide Masters and McGuides, offer a departure from conventional linear guidance systems by employing a polygonal profile for enhanced precision, longevity, and rigidity, particularly suited for high-precision applications. Furthermore, our Linear Actuators utilize SAMICK-made components for unparalleled precision and reliability, catering to industries such as semiconductor and secondary battery manufacturing, where stringent demands for precision are paramount.

Linear bushings from SAMICK

Could you elaborate on the special advantages of SAMICK’s CLB series, particularly regarding its “Compact” designation?

Woo Suk Choi: The CLB series epitomizes compactness, offering space-efficient solutions that maximize utilization in confined applications. Key advantages include:

  • Space Efficiency: The CLB series optimizes space utilization compared to conventional ball bushings, providing customers with greater flexibility in installation.
  • Versatility: Its price competitiveness makes it an attractive option for a wide range of applications.
  • Anti-rust Properties: The recent development of the SUS (Stainless Steel) type caters to industries such as food and pharmaceuticals, where resistance to corrosion is essential.

How do SAMICK’s linear bearings stack up against those of well-known European manufacturers?

Woo Suk Choi: In Europe, several manufacturers offer a broad spectrum of high-quality linear motion products. SAMICK distinguishes itself by providing comparable alternatives to renowned brands such as Bosch Rexroth, INA, EWELLIX, and others. Specifically, our CLB series aligns seamlessly with Compact series bearings from INA (KH) and EWELLIX (LBBR).

At PICARD, you’ll find a comprehensive stock of our CLB series, including the standard series (e.g., CLB10), variants with seals (CLB…UU), stainless steel options for anti-rust properties (CLB…NS), and combinations of stainless steel with seals (CLB…UUNS). This comprehensive availability underscores our commitment to meeting diverse customer needs. We are confident that discerning customers in Europe recognize SAMICK’s dedication to quality and technology. Therefore, we see great potential for our products in the European market in the future.

SAMICK’s mission emphasizes the “noble labor value of human beings.” How does this mission translate into your daily operations and decision-making?

Woo Suk Choi: SAMICK’s mission serves as a guiding principle for every employee, shaping our decisions and actions. It signifies our commitment to enhancing the dignity of labor, not merely as a source of personal fulfilment, but also as a means of making meaningful societal contributions. Whether it’s through product innovation, customer service, or social initiatives, our mission underscores our responsibility to uplift human welfare.

Do you actively participate in exhibitions, particularly in Europe?

Woo Suk Choi: Absolutely! SAMICK regularly exhibits at renowned trade fairs such as Hannover Messe and Motek in Germany, IMTS Chicago in the USA, and SIMTOS and Interbattery in Korea. These platforms allow us to showcase our latest products, provide technical support, and engage with our customers on a global scale.

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your valuable insights, Mr. Choi!
