From judgment to vulnerability: My Experience with the ‘Open To Work’ Frame
Oh, the dreaded “Open to Work” frame. For the longest time, I viewed it as a sign of weakness, a badge of secret shame. I’ve always coached against using it, not for any valid reason, but because it didn’t feel like the right move. I even subscribed to the adage, “It’s better to find a new job when you already have one,” without questioning its validity. Who created that thought anyway? Is there data proving that hiring managers prefer candidates who are already employed? Or is it just another baseless narrative we’ve bought into?
But this isn’t about dissecting hiring perceptions. It’s about my decision to challenge my own long-held beliefs and test the “Open to Work” frame after years of dismissing it. And let me tell you, it’s humbling to admit that my resistance wasn’t rooted in logic, just judgment. Petty, right?
I’ve been candid about my “in-between” phase in life, hosting talks and even initiating pulse checks for others (though, let’s be honest, it was also a way to reassure myself). Yet, despite my skills, education, experience, and a solid portfolio of connections. I’ve found myself in this in-between space longer than expected.

So, this weekend, I decided to try something different. I put up the “Open to Work” frame on my LinkedIn profile.
Why now? Because nothing else has worked. And I’m curious. Will this frame, this green halo of vulnerability, actually make a difference? Will it flood me with opportunities or at least validate its existence as a tool for job seekers?
Maybe this is about more than just the frame. Maybe it’s about shedding old narratives, challenging biases (even my own), and embracing vulnerability in the face of change.
Listen, I'm just having a conversation with myself about this--out loud. Y'all stay lifted out here.
