From Ithaca, Okinawa, and Beyond--The Life of Field Geologist Paul Myers

From Ithaca, Okinawa, and Beyond--The Life of Field Geologist Paul Myers

Dr. Paul Myers is a well-respected geologist in the Midwest and in the western USA.?Paul recently wrote a short, humorous autobiography about his life growing up during the Great Depression, serving as a US Air Force B-29 gunner based in Okinawa in 1947 (only two years after the fierce WWII battle), attending college on the GI Bill (St. Lawrence Univ.), "adventures" in graduate school (Harvard Univ., Syracuse Univ., and the Univ. of Michigan), and his life as a geology professor.?He illustrates his story with classic photos, including some showing war-damaged Okinawa in 1947.?

Paul was a founder of our Geology Department at UW-Eau Claire.?However, you don't need to be a geologist to appreciate his humorous story.?I encourage you to read it!

You can view a pdf of his autobiography at https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/kent-syverson-26144652/detail/overlay-view/urn:li:fsd_profileTreasuryMedia:(ACoAAAsZfekB6EblxxReIJ8PiUns-f-1n07kP6Q,1635465243302)/

Myers, Willis, Wilson & Bergstrom... the classics of Phillips Hall. Found memories from the Field Geology Camp at the Boulder Hot springs... Paul always had an interesting story to spin. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for publishing this Kent! Since graduating in the same department as my grandpa Paul taught in, I've been picking up where he left off - listening to the rocks and doing the hard work they don't have the hands for. I've still got a long ways to go if I want to start to fill those non-stop shoes of his.

Paul Myers teaching petrology class; "let's take a field trip!" so all pile into his Honda Civic and we're off to Neillsville Mounds and points beyond..

Great Paul story: It’s his last semester before he retired. The halls of PHILIPS were full of world class mineral specimens that belonged to him. I asked Paul, what are you going to do with these tons of samples? He quipped back quickly “I am going to put them back.” He made us college kids look bad the way her to scale an outcrop so quickly.
