From Internet Consumers to Developers: The Genesis

Technological innovations are made with an aim to solve problems in society. The aim of most technological advances is to make a positive impact in the society. This is because before any technological innovation, there is always an identified need that necessitated an innovation. However, when it comes to children, do they really understand that? Or do they think that all these tech advances are just a source of entertainment and passing of time?

As an adult when you see these young ones using digital devices, what comes to your mind? Do you feel proud that your child is able to navigate through digital devices or do you get concerned about what they are doing with those devices? Asking the former is kind of a negligence on your part as an adult. However, asking the latter can be a key driver of change.?

What we need to understand is that as responsible adults we need to guide these young ones into using technology the right way. A way that can help themselves and the society in general.

The first key step to ensuring that is by changing the mindset of these children from being just internet consumers to creators/developers. Here are some of the ways to do exactly that;

  • Teach and encourage both safe and responsible use of technology: Set clear guidelines for the use of technology and help children understand how to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. This can include teaching digital citizenship skills and promoting a balance between screen time and hands-on exploration.
  • Encourage Exploration and Curiosity: Provide children with opportunities to explore technology and digital tools in a creative and interactive manner. Offer children access to open-ended apps and software that allow for exploration, creativity, and problem-solving. These could include coding apps like scratch, digital art tools, or apps that encourage tinkering and experimentation in order to spark their interest in creating content rather than just consuming it.
  • Promote Project-Based Learning: Integrate interactive online platforms and tools that support collaborative project work, such as Google Docs, or project management software. These tools facilitate communication, collaboration, and information sharing among students working on project-based learning. Also encourage children to engage in project-based learning activities where they can work on real-world projects that require them to design, develop, and implement solutions using technology. This hands-on approach can inspire them to become creators and innovators in the digital space.
  • Provide Mentorship and Guidance: Connect children with mentors, educators, or professionals in the tech industry who can inspire and guide them in their journey to becoming developers. Mentorship can provide valuable insights, support, and encouragement to children as they explore technology and digital creation. Video conferencing tools can facilitate virtual field trips and guest speaker sessions.
  • Offer Access to Tools and Resources: Ensure that children have access to the necessary tools, resources, and technology platforms to practice coding, design, and development. Providing access to software, online tutorials, and coding platforms can empower children to hone their skills and unleash their creativity.
  • Emphasize Problem-Solving Skills: Encourage children to approach challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Teach them to think critically, analyze problems, and develop innovative solutions using technology. By fostering a problem-solving mindset, children can transition from passive consumers to active creators in the digital world.

By putting these measures into practice, this can be very instrumental in bringing a positive mind shift among young minds. Because if we can have problem solvers spread all over, there are no better change drivers than that.
