From Intern to Level-Three Manager: Tereza Ko?ut Tělecká and her career development at MSD
MSD Czech Republic
We are the Europe’s TOP EMPLOYER for 2025! The company with cool people, exciting happenings and meet-ups.
Today, we would like to speak more about opportunities to grow and develop within the company that we give to all our employees, even to those who start at MSD as interns while still studying. Therefore, we have asked Tereza Ko?ut Tělecká , another colleague whose career advancement at MSD was more than spectacular, a couple of questions. Tereza managed to work her way up from a student intern to a leadership role and now she reveals her whole success story.
What aspects of the company's culture and values initially attracted you to join, and how have those aspects continued to motivate and guide you throughout your journey from intern to level-three manager?
I initially joined MSD while studying for my bachelor's degree, and at that time, I didn't fully realise the extent of what a great company I was joining. However, as I progressed and compared my experiences to those shared by friends at other companies, I truly began to appreciate the culture, opportunities for learning and growth that MSD offered.
I'd like to highlight the support and guidance I received from my managers. They understood that my education was a priority and were flexible in accommodating my part-time needs when necessary. They provided mentorship when I needed it, but also recognized when I needed space to work on projects independently. Having this strong support system has been key to my growth and development.
Additionally, I have become involved in the company's Employee Resource Business Group (ERBG), particularly the Women's Network, where I am currently a co-leader. Being part of these activities has not only allowed me to broaden my skill set but also make a meaningful impact within the organisation, which is something I greatly value.
Can you describe the most significant challenge you faced from being an intern to a level-three manager, and how you overcame it?
I think the most significant challenge was the transition from being an individual contributor to a leadership role. As an intern, I was mainly responsible for my own tasks and had limited oversight of others. However, as I levelled up, I had to take on broader responsibilities, including leading a team and driving results through others. This required me to develop new skills such as delegation, communication, and conflict resolution. To overcome this challenge, I sought guidance from my manager and resources within the company to enhance my leadership skills. I'm taking advantage of the training and development opportunities that are available. It's also a good idea to observe and learn from experienced managers within the company - how are they leading and what can I learn from them?
?
What key skills or experiences from your early days at the company do you believe have been crucial to your success as a level-three manager today?
One key skill is definitely my ability to adapt and embrace change. In the early days of my career at the company, I was exposed to various projects and assignments that required me to quickly learn and adapt to new situations. This taught me the importance of being flexible and open to new ideas and approaches. The ability to navigate through changing priorities and different requirements has been essential in driving successful outcomes for my team and the company.

As someone who has experienced various levels within the organisation, what advice would you give to newer employees who aspire to climb the corporate ladder and achieve similar career growth?
Be proactive and take initiative. Seek out opportunities to learn and grow, whether it's through additional projects or roles outside of your comfort zone. Be curious and willing to step outside of your defined responsibilities to explore new areas of the business. Additionally, make connections and build relationships with colleagues and mentors who can provide guidance and support throughout your career journey. Finally, don't be afraid to ask for feedback and take constructive criticism as an opportunity for growth.
